At Cathay, the journey is just as important as the destination, and helping make yours as smooth as possible is our top priority. That includes ensuring your luggage is up to the task – even when you’re staying close to home. In addition to a new luggage tag and passport holder, our new classic collection features stylish yet durable ‘70s-inspired bowling bags, designed to hold everything you need when you’re on the go, and available to purchase from Cathay Shop for a limited time and for inflight delivery.
Our bowling bag, available in two designs, revives the vintage hues our airline used to adorn. The cream-white version is embellished with our signature Tung Hoi design, a striking dark green wave pattern that symbolises our promise to ride the wave and forge ahead with you. Meanwhile, the dark green is accented with two white stripes, reminiscent of our pre-’90s aircraft livery.
Complete with premium silver hardware and a front slip pocket, the bag has a main compartment with a wide zip opening and plenty of space to fit all your essentials, whether you’re jetting off for a weekend getaway or heading to the gym for a workout. Thanks to its detachable, adjustable crossbody strap, unique silhouette, and large carrying handles, the bag is also ideal for pairing with different outfits.
The limited-edition classic bowling bag - mini comes with all the same features but in a more compact size, snugly fitting everything you need from day to night.
The collection is a celebration of Cathay’s legacy, inviting both older and younger generations of travellers to revisit our earliest milestones. Here, we look back at the era that inspired this retro collection.
It's the year 1970: Kai Tak Airport, precariously folded into Kowloon’s cityscape and surrounded by residential buildings, is still Hong Kong’s hub for air travel, and Cathay has just opened its first-ever lounge here for VIPs and Cathay members to wind down before their flight.
In that same year, we published the first edition of our inflight magazine, named Discovery.
Toward the end of the decade, we received our first Boeing 747-200, VR-HKG, which would help propel us forward as a global airline with a long-haul network. In the following years, our services would expand to destinations across land and sea, from Brisbane and San Francisco to Amsterdam and Paris.
It was in the ’90s that the iconic brushwing logo that’s since come to represent our brand was born, replacing the green-and-white-striped livery which used to adorn our planes.
In a tribute to our past on our 77th anniversary, this collection is a reminder of the values that we have always upheld and of our unwavering commitment to connecting people with places, experiences, and each other.
Elevate your travel style with a touch of nostalgia and pick up our bowling bags on your next flight with us. Can’t wait?
