Muay Thai may be Thailand’s official national sport, but shopping surely comes a close second. For variety and value, Bangkok offers some of the best retail experiences in Asia. What makes the capital so appealing is its scope of options: sleek mega shopping malls in Bangkok such as Siam Paragon, Terminal 21 and Central World marry high-end designers and international brands with breakthrough Thai labels.

Those seeking a more characterful experience, meanwhile, will find much to love among the city’s array of independent retailers and street markets. Of course, don’t miss iconic fixtures such as Chatuchak Weekend Market, where thousands of outdoor market stalls supply plentiful opportunities to loosen the purse strings.

Going strong since 1951, the Jim Thompson silk brand is testament to longevity forged through quality. Its continued relevance is also testament to the brand’s evolution over the decades. You’ll find fabric heaven at the brand’s Surawong flagship, which has stood at the same location since 1967.

The luxury shop offers an immersive introduction to the brand: on the first two floors, you’ll discover clothes, accessories and homewares ranging from cushion covers to neckties. On higher floors, beautiful Thai silk fabrics are sold by the square metre, while mocked-up rooms offer plenty of inspiration.

    Siam Discovery

Like the neighbouring Siam Center, this mall embraces youthfulness. However, the two offer completely contrasting retail experiences. At Siam Discovery , the vibe is more sophisticated and edgy, with a pronounced influence from Japan and Korea. Indeed, the fashion mall was revamped by acclaimed Japanese studio Nendo, which contrasted a striking exterior with a largely open-plan concept within; products are stylishly displayed as if installed in someone’s home.

Japanese aesthetics are also prominent among the products on offer, with designer brands such as Beautiful People, Tsumori Chisato, and Miharayasuhiro all represented alongside Thai labels. Don’t miss The Exploratorium, the largest lifestyle speciality shop in Thailand, while Cazh is a shop selling more than 27 local and international streetwear labels.

    Everyday & Friends

Thai lifestyle brand Karmakamet , aka “kmkm”, has come a long way since the turn of the millennium. Since opening its first shop at Chatuchak Weekend Market in 2001, the brand has expanded to become one of Thailand’s most successful homegrown labels. Originally known for its aromatherapy products, Karmakamet has branched out over the years to encompass everything from fine dining to fashion.

And its magpie approach to retail is showcased at Everyday & Friends , its flagship store in one of the best shopping malls in Bangkok: Siam Square. The first floor is devoted to signature aromatic and beauty products, such as scented candles, soap and shampoo. Further up the converted four-storey shophouse, attention turns to hip stationery and lifestyle products, menswear, womenswear and – the capper on the top floor – one of Bangkok’s most Instagram friendly cafes.

    Chatuchak Weekend Market

The motherlode of unique Bangkok shopping experiences is undoubtedly the Chatuchak Weekend Market . Thailand’s largest outdoor bazaar, known as “Jatujak” or simply “JJ” to Thais, sells almost everything under the sun. Navigating the sprawling 14-hectare site and its 15,000-plus stalls can be a process, but perseverance uncovers a veritable treasure trove of gems and collectibles, ranging from stalls selling beautiful ceramics and handicrafts to exquisite jewellery.

There are even shipping companies onsite to help get your goodies home, and when quick breathers are needed, food and coffee options abound – not to mention massage parlours with free Wi-Fi. In short, set aside a day to explore one of the best markets in Bangkok.

Reclaimed hardwood from centuries-old Thai homes, Burmese teak and gleaming brass add a distinctive flair to the bespoke furnishings at this boutique near the Chao Phraya River. While minimalist pieces give a nod to Scandinavian design, local materials and techniques keep them rooted in Thailand.

The sand-cast bronze bases underpin items like handsome tables and sumptuous velvet chaises longues, continuing Thailand’s rich history of metal craftsmanship. P. Tendercool is also one of the rare spots where staff seem to relish the challenge presented by an especially discerning client or unusual request.
