Myth debunked: What insurance does an overseas student really need?

Studying abroad is an important milestone for many students. In face of a new environment and uncertainties, choosing the right insurance plan for your children is crucial. Many might think travel insurance is adequate for overseas studies. But in fact, overseas students have specific needs that are worth considering.

Every country has its unique medical system. For example, overseas students in the UK enjoy National Health Service (NHS) and free consultation, but will have to pay for their own medicine or fees at private hospitals. Countries like Australia, America and Canada have a similar system where consultation and pharmacies are separate, and patients are responsible for their own medication fees. This is why overseas students require extensive medical and health protection. What’s more, travel insurance often comes with a limit on how many days you can be abroad. The protection period for a typical single travel insurance is 180 days, and 90 days for an annual travel insurance. All these are not exactly ideal for overseas students.

Chubb Overseas Student Protection provides up to HKD 1,000,000 medical expenses cover for confinement or outpatient treatment for any accidents that occur—suitable for all medical systems and regional limitations.

Apart from essential travel insurance and medical and accident protection, Chubb Overseas Student Protection also includes protection designed for students. These include protection for all travel and leisure activities during the study period—including skiing, scuba diving, rafting, parachuting and all water sports. As well as Education Fund and protection against Study Interruption.  Education Fund protection subsidises the continuation of the Insured Student’s study in the event of the Accidental death or Permanent Total Disability of the Insured Parent / Guardian;  Study Interruption cover reimburses the loss of tuition fees due to serious bodily injury or sickness —needs that travel insurance cannot provide for.
