Travelling with kids comes with its own challenges, starting at the airport where the pent-up energy of holiday excitement meets the controlled and structured world of immigration, security and the possible patience-stretching wait.
Fortunately, Hong Kong International Airport meets the needs of younger travellers – and their parents. This is especially true since the opening of the expanded Terminal 2 (T2), and the ongoing rollout of Skytopia , the airport’s all-new art, commerce and culinary hub. Upon completion in 2031, Skytopia will house a “sportainment” complex as well as Hong Kong’s largest water recreation area, yacht bay and purpose-built indoor performance venue.

For now, the airport already provides infant strollers , with built-in space for some hand luggage for no cost. Parents of the tiniest travellers will also appreciate the ample provision of 35 nursing rooms across the departures area.
There are also several kid-friendly themed areas throughout the departures hall. Families can enjoy the interactive games and playground equipment at the three Buzz zones , or the Wonder zone at Terminal 1 which offers movies, virtual reality and games.
Children aged six to 12 can make the most of the Wonder Eggshell play area, and keep an eye out for The Flow of Flights , a life-sized game of “aeroplane chess”.

Pass time and wow your little ones’ minds with a walk along the Sky Bridge, a 200-metre-long footbridge connecting to the T1 Satellite Concourse. Those with an interest in aviation will also love the views of both runways from the open, glass design of the main length of the terminal from Gates 11 to 35.

The airport’s retail partners are another form of distraction and amusement for those travelling with kids. Don’t miss Wondersaurus, a shop celebrating educational toys and gifts that inspire creativity and imagination. The Kaboom store at the far end of Terminal 1, near Gate 40 or the midfield concourse, obliges with its collection of both best-selling and rare Lego sets, toys and games. And no trip to the airport with young kids is complete without stopping by The Magic of Hong Kong Disneyland store .
Other destinations that may lighten your purse pre-flight include, The Moomin Shop , packed with cute memorabilia celebrating the iconic Finnish cartoon, and Toys & Games , which delivers exactly what the name promises.
And if a lollipop or stash of gummies would help ensure good inflight behaviour, there are Sweet Dreams by Heinemann outlets where you can stock up before boarding. Surely, the regular parental rules don’t apply at 30,000 feet…
