It is safe to say that travelling in a COVID-19 world is different to what we’re all used to. That is why we have put together the following list of requirements for travelling to our home market Hong Kong, so you can be prepared for your international flight from Australia.

Travelling to Hong Kong from Australia

Before travelling into Hong Kong, all travellers are required to submit a health declaration form. After submitting this online form, the system will generate a QR code. Please save this and show it to the border control staff upon entering Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). The QR code is valid for 48 hours upon creation for arrivals into HKIA, and for 24 hours when transiting.

You will need to undergo a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based nucleic acid test 72 hours before the scheduled departure flights to Hong Kong. And the report has to be negative and include your name which is identical to your travel document. E.g. if your name shows “JOHNSTON MATTHEW” on your passport, the exact name “JOHNSTON MATTHEW” must also be printed on your test report.

Separate documentary proof (in English or Chinese) is needed to show that the laboratory or healthcare institution is ISO 15189 accredited or is recognised or approved by the relevant authority of the government of the place in which the laboratory or healthcare institution is located. This can be in the form of a copy of ‘Certificate of Accreditation’, ‘Certificate of Compliance’, or information printed out from an official government website.

If you have been fully vaccinated

If you have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to arrival, and have stayed in Australia in the 14 days prior to arrival, you are required to quarantine for 14 days in a government designated hotel. At the airport, you must present a record of your vaccination, and confirmation of your hotel reservation.

You will then need to undergo 4 COVID tests during quarantine, self-monitoring in the subsequent 7 days, and two COVID tests on the 16th  and 19th  day of arrival.

If you have not been fully vaccinated and have stayed in Australia in the 14 days prior to arrival, you must undergo 21 day quarantine in a designated quarantine hotel. As above, you will need to present confirmation of your hotel reservation to border staff.

You will then need to undergo 6 COVID tests during quarantine.

In terms of transiting via Hong Kong with your international flight from Australia, for overseas travel, each government has their own entry requirements depending on your final destination. Please check the government website of your final destination, to see the requirements for travelling into that destination and via Hong Kong. You will still need to submit the Hong Kong health declaration form as above, however no other transit requirements have been set by the Hong Kong government.

 Explore our list of frequently asked questions below for answers to the most commonly asked questions our customers have for flights from Australia.   

A: The flight times between Australia and Hong Kong depends on where you are departing from. Flights from the Australian eastern seaboard to Hong Kong typically take longer than flights from the western coast to Hong Kong,  which also differ from flight times from the southern coast to Hong Kong. Examples include Sydney to Hong Kong, which typically takes 9h 15m on average, whereas Perth to Hong Kong takes 7h 35m and Adelaide to Hong Kong takes 8h and 50m. These times are subject to various conditions are approxiamate as per our schedule data.   

A: The flight times between Australia and our most popular destinations depends on where you are departing from and which city you plan to arrive in. Popular flights to Europe from Australia for example all transit via our hub, Hong Kong, and will take on average over 20 hours. Examples include flights from Sydney to Paris , which takes 22h 10m, whereas Perth to London takes approximately 20h 15m.

 

 

A: Australia’s borders are closed currently for international travel from Australia, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Currently you are able to depart for international travel from Australia if you are provided an exemption or special exemption. For the latest information, please visit the Department of Home Affairs.  

 

A: International flights from Australia currently do not have an exact date for resumption and are subject to when Australia’s borders will open to international travel. To keep up to date with current restrictions and information, visit the COVID-19 Home Affairs website.   

 

A: Australian citizens and permanent residents are prohibited from travelling out of Australia, unless they hold an exemption. Passengers can apply online and must meet at least one of the following requirements: 

·         Travel is part of the response to COVID-19, including the provision of aid

·         Travel is for business / employer

·         Travelling to receive urgent medical treatment that is not available in Australia

·         Travelling outside Australia for a compelling reason, for three months or longer

·         Travelling on compassionate or humanitarian grounds

·         Travel is in the national interest
