This new boutique retreat is the third member of the Shishi-Iwa House collection of design-forward properties. For Shishi-Iwa House No.03 (SSH No.03), Pritzker Prize winner Ryue Nishizawa merged a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese design with an appreciation of the idyllic location to create an architectural masterpiece that’s deeply rooted in nature.
Located near the Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary, SSH No.03 is the ideal getaway for those who’d like to connect with nature. Ten pavilions with charred cedar wood façades house all the guestrooms and a large villa and are connected by a series of winding engawa (covered walkways) and courtyards. Inside, hinoki (Japanese cypress wood) features prominently, including in the minimalist Superior rooms and the exquisite Tatami Suites. Each room is elevated by furniture from leading designers, including Charles and Ray Eames and Arne Jacobsen. The hotel also offers activities like waterfall trekking and farm tours, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the wonders of the natural world.
The two Shigeru Ban-designed sister properties in Shishi-Iwa House’s portfolio – SSH No.01 and SSH No.02 – are just a short walk away. Enjoy a meal at Shola in SSH No.02, where chef Masashi Okamoto serves Japanese French cuisine made with local produce.
