Unpacking the Cathay x Samsonite suitcase collection

When you’re zipping through the airport, the last thing you want is an unwieldy suitcase slowing you down. You need a travel companion that’s lightweight, easy to manoeuvre and makes you look effortlessly cool. That’s why we’ve partnered with Samsonite to launch our very first Cathay- branded suitcase collection, featuring a stylish carry-on, check-in bag and travel accessories. 

“As a premium travel lifestyle brand, we’re constantly seeking ways to enhance the travel experience,” says Jessica Lee, Head of Brand and Content at Cathay. “It’s only natural for us to create products in the travel category – and that includes luggage that aligns with our brand. 

“Rather than designing suitcases from scratch, we sought to work with an industry leader who shares our commitment to exceptional design and superior quality. We needed a partner with a global presence to cater to Cathay customers worldwide. With Samsonite’s focus on function and style and their international reach, they were the ideal collaborator for our first-ever suitcase collection.” 

The collaboration process started in the first quarter of 2023 when the Cathay Brand team began examining Samsonite’s range of suitcases. After careful consideration, they selected the Minter range and began working with Samsonite’s designers to make the bags their own. 

At the core of the design is a deep understanding of Cathay members’ needs. “Our customers are constantly on the move, so they need something durable, modern-looking, and relatively lightweight,” says Jacqueline Young, Brand Manager at Cathay. “And that’s exactly what we created.” 

The 100-litre, 75cm check-in suitcase and 33-litre 55cm carry-on showcase a vertical grooved pattern in Cathay’s signature Jade colour. While the designers initially explored various shades of grey, they ultimately chose Jade due to its brand connection, unisex appeal and easy visibility on the baggage carousel. The colour is elegantly complemented by silver accents and a subtly debossed Cathay logo on the front. 

Inside, you’ll discover a thoughtfully designed interior that can be customised to suit your needs, with multi-pocketed detachable dividers and packing cube travel accessories. 

Sustainable materials were utilised in the design, too: the high-quality jacquard lining was created using RecyclexTM material technology, utilising 100 per cent post-consumer recycled PET bottles. You may recognise the subtle wave pattern, too – it’s similar to what you’ll find on your Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard^®. 

But it’s not just about looks – the suitcases were designed with utility and durability in mind. Built with Samsonite’s Aero-TracTM suspension wheel system and a smooth, manoeuvrable built-in ball bearing mechanism, the wheels provide effortless mobility, reduce noise and minimise vibrations. Additionally, each suitcase features an anti-theft double zipper and a TSA combination lock for enhanced security and peace of mind.
