Freaky Tales

Freaky Tales (Movie, Thriller) wears its 80s nostalgia proudly, while simultaneously bubbling with originality. As its title declares, this action-comedy film delivers four wonderfully weird tales, set during a single night in 1987 in California. There’s the punk couple who take on a gang of skinheads, the former hitman whose past catches up to him, the female rappers fighting to get their music heard, and the basketball star who has his own way of dealing with burglars. It’s a wild, chaotic ride. 

Four Trails

Robin Lee’s ode to Hong Kong explores the beauty and might of the city’s natural landscapes via one of its most gruelling races: the Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge (HK4TUC), which combines four major hiking routes and spans almost 300km. Four Trails (Movie, Documentary) follows five participants competing in the 2021 race – each with their own goals and obstacles to overcome. The journey is filled with the kind of unexpected twists that can only come from real life.

All We Imagine as Light

In Mumbai, two Malayali nurses and a struggling cook navigate love, identity, and societal pressures in All We Imagine as Light (Movie, Drama). Prabha (Kani Kusruti) longs for her estranged husband, Anu (Divya Prabha) hides an interfaith romance, and Parvathy (Chhaya Kadam) faces eviction. A journey to a coastal village intertwines their lives, exploring intimacy, resilience and self-discovery.

Wick is Pain

From an indie film that was nearly scrapped to a hit movie franchise loved worldwide, John Wick is a Hollywood success story. This story is recounted in full in Wick is Pain (Movie, Documentary), complete with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the director, cast and crew. This documentary also lifts the lid on the creative process of filmmaking, from getting a project off the ground to bringing a fight scene to life. Spotlight: The Way We Talk

Wolf (Neo Yau), Alan (Marco Ng) and Sophie (Chung Suet Ying) are three young deaf people navigating their lives in different ways. Most at odds are Sophie, who self-consciously chooses to speak rather than sign, and Wolf, who proudly embraces sign language as his native tongue. But as The Way We Talk (Movie, Drama) shows, both paths are strewn with obstacles. With this thoughtful depiction of the interior worlds of those in Hong Kong’s deaf community, director Adam Wong creates new space for conversations around identity and inclusivity. Mickey 17

In Mickey 17 (Movie, Sci-Fi/Fantasy), Parasite director Bong Joon-ho delivers a wry commentary on worker exploitation. Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) is a recruit on a spaceship tasked with colonising a distant planet. Deemed expendable, he is repeatedly sent to his death on fatal missions, only to have his body “reprinted”. Each iteration of Mickey is a shadow of the former, with a diminishing number of memories. Slowly, he stumbles towards an existential crisis.

IVE THE 1ST WORLD TOUR in CINEMA

After taking their Show What I Have tour around the world, K-pop girls IVE returned to Seoul last year for a special encore performance at the KSPO Dome. The Girl with the Needle

Loosely based on real events, The Girl with the Needle (Movie, Drama) recalls a disturbing chapter in Danish history. Shot in striking black and white, it depicts a bleak, postwar Copenhagen, where Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne), an impoverished factory worker, finds herself pregnant and desperate. Fatefully, she accepts the help of the charming Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm), whose true intent gradually carries this film into the realm of horror. 

Flow

From Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis comes a rare gem of a film. The Academy Award-winning Flow (Movie, Animation) tells the story of Cat, an animal whose life is upended by a great, devastating flood. He seeks refuge on a boat, where he meets a host of other animals, and together they embark on a journey of survival and friendship. There’s no dialogue here; just charming, DIY-style animation that succeeds in breathing life into the film’s characters and eco-inspired story.

Fresh off Markham

Fresh off Markham (Movie, Comedy) interweaves the stories of three individuals in the Toronto suburb of Markham. Shan (Nian Chang) has just arrived from the Chinese Mainland and immediately becomes embroiled in a disastrous robbery. O’Shea (Edmond Clark) is an Uber driver who finds himself the unwitting getaway driver of this heist, while Circle (Yee Chun Jessica Chan) is a Hong Kong socialite whose ride is hijacked. At times absurd, this film is nevertheless a thoughtful exploration of immigration and identity.

Am I Being Unreasonable?

A delicious mix of comedy and horror, series Am I Being Unreasonable? (TV, Comedy) revolves around the increasingly knotty friendship between Nic (Daisy May Cooper), a lonely, put-upon mother, and Jen (Selin Hizli), her seemingly friendly new neighbour. With season one ending in a slew of secrets coming to light, season two dives right back into the drama, with more moments of both hand-gripping tension and laugh-out-loud humour.

Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story

Lifting the veil on a legend, Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story (Movie, Documentary) offers an intimate look at the life of singer and actor Liza Minnelli. The documentary focuses on a period of personal and professional struggle in Minnelli’s life, following the death of her mother Judy Garland and before her ascension to superstardom. Through it all, Minnelli’s warmth as a person and sparkle as a performer shine through.  

The Land of Morning Calm

Painting a fascinating portrait of life in a small Korean fishing village, The Land of Morning Calm (Movie, Drama) centres on two men. Fisherman Yong-su (Park Jong-hwan) longs to escape his tough existence, and in a moment of despair fakes his own death. His actions have far-reaching consequences for his elderly captain Yeong-guk (Yoon Joo-sang), who finds himself, amid his other struggles, under intense scrutiny over the disappearance.

Anora

A young working-class woman sees her life change overnight when she marries the son of a wealthy oligarch. Yet Anora (Movie, Comedy) is far from a Cinderella story. With a mix of weighty realism and light-hearted vivacity, the film lays bare the societal injustices that ultimately exclude the titular Anora from the world she fights for a place in. Star Mikey Madison pours energy and emotion into the film’s heroine – you’ll never take your eyes off her.

Tokyo Cowboy

Cultures converge in Tokyo Cowboy (Movie, Drama), a gentle drama about a Japanese businessman tasked with saving an American cattle ranch. Having convinced his bosses in Tokyo that he can make the struggling ranch profitable, the ambitious Hideki (Arata Iura) arrives in rural Montana to find that he's underestimated the cultural challenges involved. What follows is a thoughtful journey of discovery and acceptance, set against the grassy plains and snowcapped peaks of the Mountain West.

Stuntman

Action film director Sam (Stephen Tung Wai) hasn’t worked in years – not since a risky stunt ended in tragedy, destroying his reputation and career. When a venerated director gives him a chance at a comeback, he’s determined to coordinate a series of truly epic fight scenes. The main challenge, however, will be winning the trust of the film’s cast and crew. A tale of regret and redemption, as well as a tribute to classic Hong Kong action films, Stuntman (Movie, Action/Adventure) is both a touching and thrilling watch.

Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World

In Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World (Movie, Action/Adventure), Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) — who now wields the shield of Captain America after events in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier – meets with newly elected US president Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) and soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident. In a race against time, Sam must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

Paddington in Peru

Having stolen the hearts of all ages in his first two films, Paddington Bear returns for a third big-screen adventure. Paddington in Peru (Movie, Comedy) sees the hat-wearing, marmalade-eating bear journey to his old home in the rainforests of Peru, where he reunites with his dear Aunt Lucy, and becomes entangled in a new series of mishaps. While its vibrant location provides fresh scope for adventure, Paddington in Peru remains true to the franchise’s small-time charm and simple message of kindness.

Her Story

Two women with very different lives are brought together in Her Story (Movie, Romantic Comedy). Tiemei (Song Jia) is a no-nonsense single mother; Ye (Elaine Zhong) is a free-spirited romantic. Each is dealing with their own private struggles and past traumas; yet they unexpectedly find strength and solidarity in one another’s friendship. Her Story gets its narrative and characters just right, taking viewers on a journey that feels grounded, while offering a sense of hope.

Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words

The inspiring story of Megan Thee Stallion is marked by several dark chapters. The American rapper recounts them with courage, honesty and unprecedented detail in Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words (Movie, Documentary). Interspersing live footage, interviews, and beautiful animated sequences, this documentary charts Megan Thee Stallion’s rise to musical success, the shocking incident that threatened to destabilise her life and career, and her subsequent journey to recovery.

The Brutalist

Hollywood’s latest triumph, The Brutalist (Movie, Drama) is an epic three-hour deconstruction of the American Dream. It centres around Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Holocaust survivor who has fled Europe to start a new life in America. There, he’s offered the chance to design a grand new building. Yet his hopes and dreams are destroyed as quickly as they are realised, as Tóth buckles under the weight of exploitation, his immigrant identity and past trauma.

Small Things Like These

Adapted from the 2021 novel by Claire Keegan, Small Things Like These (Movie, Drama) perfectly captures the moral struggle at the centre of Keegan’s story. Living in a small, recession-hit Irish town presided over by the Catholic Church, coal merchant Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) is modest and hardworking. However, during a visit to the local convent, he encounters an unmarried young mother forcibly separated from her infant child – and comes face to face with a dilemma that will change his quiet life forever.

Babygirl

Desire and power become dangerously entangled in Babygirl (Movie, Drama), a film about a relationship between a high-flying boss and her much younger intern. Nicole Kidman plays Romy, a successful CEO, wife and mother whose picture-perfect life is marred by private frustrations. When she encounters the young but cocksure Samuel (Harris Dickinson), she is enticed into a risky affair in which he is the one calling the shots – or is he? In such a volatile dynamic, the answer is far from clear.

Love Lies

Seeking another chance at love, widow Veronica (Sandra Ng) joins a dating app where she meets Alain, a charming French engineer. Sparks instantly fly, but there's a problem: Alain is really Joe (MC Cheung Tin-fu), the newest recruit at a dating scam syndicate. Suffice to say, Love Lies (Movie, Romantic Comedy) is not your average romcom. As Joe battles with his conscience and Veronica grasps at fleeting happiness, the film raises questions about love and connection in the digital age. Wicked

Wicked, one of the most beloved and enduring stage musicals, now arrives on your screen as a generation-defining cinematic event. The untold story of the witches of Oz, Wicked (Movie, Sci-Fi/Fantasy) stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman who has yet to discover her true power, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman who has yet to discover her true heart. Their extraordinary adventures will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

An Abandoned Team

Friendships come in all forms, and in An Abandoned Team (Movie, Drama), they’re of the four-legged variety. This touching film tells the story of Kai (Lawrence Cheng), a cantankerous 60-year-old living alone. Retired, divorced, and estranged from his daughter, he’s ready to end his life – but is saved by a stray dog named Roast Piggy. As it happens, the animal is also in need saving. Soon a bond is forged between the pair, offering both a second chance in life.

Explore the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands as Disney presents Mufasa: The Lion King (Movie, Sci-Fi/Fantasy). Follow Rafiki as he recounts the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara — daughter of Simba and Nala — with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka, who is heir to a royal bloodline.

Harlequin, Lady Gaga

Following her turn as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, Lady Gaga presents a companion album that pays tribute to her illustrious character. Harlequin (Audio, Western Pop) is a miscellany of classic covers and original songs. Folie à Deux and Happy Mistake, the two tracks penned by Gaga, sit comfortably alongside big band hits like That’s Life. With a sound that spans jazz, gospel and Broadway, the record shows Gaga both in touch with her character and in her musical element.

The Last Dance

When the pandemic dries up his business, wedding planner Dominic (Dayo Wong) turns to funeral arranging. His new partner, however, is a stern Taoist priest, Master Man (Michael Hui), who’s too concerned with performing the rites of the deceased to be impressed by Dominic’s sales tactics. Clearly, the commercially minded Dominic has much to learn about taking care of the dead; but as The Last Dance (Movie, Drama) soon reveals, Man has even more to learn about caring for the living.

Nickel Boys

Elwood (Ethan Herisse) is a black teen growing up in Florida during segregation. He’s bright, hardworking and on the path to community college – but through a series of injustices, he instead ends up at Nickel Academy, a reform school where violence and cruelty are the daily modes of instruction. Nickel Boys (Movie, Drama) brings Colson Whitehead’s acclaimed novel viscerally to life, with director RaMell Ross using point-of-view cinematography to create an immersive storytelling experience.

Witches

In this thought-provoking film, Elizabeth Sankey explores the figure of the witch alongside motherhood and mental health. She begins Witches (Movie, Documentary) by recounting her own experience with postpartum psychosis and her time spent recovering in a psychiatric ward alongside other mothers, before delving into a wider exploration of the societal expectations and restrictions placed on women. This she layers with a history of the persecution of the witch for a rich, fascinating watch.

The Day of the Jackal

Spy series The Day of the Jackal (TV, Drama) possesses all the key elements of a great espionage thriller: a charming yet ruthless assassin, a brilliant and obsessive intelligence officer, some expensive tech and a host of fabulous European locations. But this series is made truly memorable by its intricate storytelling, palpably tense atmosphere and two excellent leads: Eddie Redmayne as the elusive killer, The Jackal, and Lashana Lynch as the MI6 agent determined to catch him.

See Her Again

Combining two classic genres – the crime drama and the time travel fantasy – See Her Again (TV, Asia) creates something altogether new. The Hong Kong series follows police detective Yeung Kwong-yiu (William Chan) as he travels between the 1990s and 2018 in an attempt to solve – and subsequently prevent – a series of murders that hit painfully close to home. With a well-crafted plot that unfolds at a tantalising pace, See Her Again makes for irresistible viewing.

Laufey’s A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl

Fans of Icelandic music sensation Laufey won’t want to miss Laufey's A Night At The Symphony: Hollywood Bowl (Movie, Concert). Making a special stop on her 2024 Bewitched Tour, the jazz-pop singer is joined at the Hollywood Bowl theatre by the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra for a night of music and glamour. Part concert movie, part documentary, A Night At The Symphony intersperses divine performances with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews.

The Cleaner

Former crime boss Dragon Ho (Chin Shih-chieh) has a new line of work – but it’s only slightly less grisly. As the head of a cleaning company that specialises in scenes where people have died, he must deal with blood, decay and other pleasant messes. At the same time, Ho is attempting to clean up the mess of his own life – starting with his relationship with his daughter. Blending comedy and drama, The Cleaner (TV, Drama) provides a novel lens through which to explore life and death.

My Sunshine

Shy schoolboy Takuya (Keitatsu Koshiyama) dreads winters in his hometown, when he's expected to join the other boys in playing ice hockey. After encountering new girl Sakura (Kiara Takanashi), a talented figure skater, he finds himself irresistibly drawn both to her and this graceful sport. My Sunshine (Movie, Drama) at first appears to be a cosy coming-of-age tale, but the film’s rosy glow belies all the pain and confusion of adolescence – a deft sleight of hand by writer-director Hiroshi Okuyama.

Beethoven Blues

On Beethoven Blues (Audio, Classical), pianist and singer Jon Batiste reimagines Beethoven’s masterpieces in a way only the bold, eclectic and highly gifted Batiste can. Weaving intricate connections between classical music and blues, he breathes new life into famed compositions such as Für Elise and 5th Symphony, showing that a reverence for classical music need not mean never daring to tamper with it. The result is an album that lovers of Beethoven, blues and everything in between will enjoy.

Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes

The life and career of screen legend Humphrey Bogart have already been well documented, but Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes (Movie, Documentary) offers something different. Drawing on archival writing and footage, it attempts to tell Bogart’s life story in his own words. As its title suggests, the film plays out like a series of flashbacks, snappily paced yet always insightful. It’s an engaging look at the actor’s illustrious Hollywood career and his myriad – and sometimes rocky – personal relationships.

Conclave

Behind the closed doors of the Vatican, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) faces a grave responsibility: overseeing the selection of a new pope. The task places him in the thick of an intense power struggle, and as candidates scheme and connive for the papacy, Lawrence becomes increasingly troubled. Conclave (Movie, Thriller) depicts all this with suspense, drama and occasional humour, acknowledging the high stakes of the situation as well as its absurdity. Fiennes is, as always, superb.

We Live in Time

Never underestimate the power of a sad love story; We Live in Time (Movie, Drama) is proof of how intelligent and moving such a narrative can be when done right. The lovers in question are Tobias (Andrew Garfield) and Almut (Florence Pugh) who meet serendipitously and begin building a life together. But as they navigate the joys and struggles of work and family, they’re plagued by the ominous sense that time is running out, and the decision of how to spend that time becomes ever more fraught.

Emilia Pérez

Thriller, tragedy, social critique and musical: Emilia Pérez (Movie, Drama) is all this and more. It follows the lives of three women in Mexico; Rita (Zoe Saldaña), a brilliant yet struggling lawyer, is sought out by Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón), a cartel leader who wishes to begin a new life as her authentic self. Yet this means cutting ties not only with her murderous past, but her wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez). Suspend your disbelief and be carried away by this genre- and expectation-defying film.

English Teacher

Series English Teacher (TV, Comedy) follows high school teacher Evan Marquez (creator and star Brian Jordan Alvarez) as he struggles to navigate the increasingly complex world of education. While passionate about his job, Marquez regularly finds himself ill-equipped to deal with his wily Gen-Z students, their demanding guardians and his equally clueless co-workers. Exploring contemporary issues with both humour and tenderness, English Teacher is a fresh take on a familiar comic set-up.

Cicada Cycle

Revisiting the past heals old and new wounds in Cicada Cycle (TV, Drama). It’s 2020, Covid-19 has sent the world in turmoil, and Tou Ka-tou aka “Tomato” (Fish Liew) has returned to Hong Kong for the first time in years. While quarantining, she reminisces. As a lonely teen, she had found solace in her school’s theatre club – until their play was abruptly cancelled by another health crisis: SARs. Now, Tomato needs the club more than ever; can she get its members back together and finally make it to opening night?

Good One

Sam (Lily Collias) has always been the “good one”. At 17, she still seeks approval from the adults around her – including her father, Chris, and his oldest friend, Matt. So when Matt’s son, Dylan, refuses to join a hiking trip with Sam and the two men, she dutifully goes along anyway. But it’s during this trip, which becomes increasingly unsettling, that things change for Sam. Betrayal, followed by disillusionment, mark her entry into adulthood, in the understated yet insightful Good One (Movie, Drama).

A Girl Named Ann

Ann (Yuumi Kawai) has lived a life few could contemplate, let alone endure: an abuse survivor, she's now battling poverty and addiction. A run-in with an unconventional detective leads to an offer of help and resources, and finally shown kindness, Ann begins to strive for a better life. It’s in this state that he encounters fellow inmate Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn. Captivated by Joker, she encourages Fleck to embrace this dark, dangerous side of himself – with dramatic consequences.

The Unwavering Brotherhood

With glossy action sequences, themes of loyalty and morality, and a gritty version of Hong Kong as its backdrop, The Unwavering Brotherhood (Movie, Action/Adventure) is a faithful and entertaining homage to the city’s classic gangster movies. It stars Bosco Wong as Wah, a trusted gang member poised to one day take over from his powerful boss (a menacing Mark Cheng). However, Wah’s loyalty is tested when two fellow members – who also happen to be his best friends – appear to go rogue.

The Penguin

DC Studios’ The Penguin (TV, Drama) tells the origin story of one of Gotham City’s most notorious villains. Colin Farrell gives a Golden Globe-winning performance as Oz Cobb, a mid-level crook with an insatiable hunger for power. Following the death of top mobster Carmine Falcone, Cobb embarks on a bloody campaign to take his place, going up against Falcone’s daughter Sofia, who has just been released from Arkham State Hospital. Full of grit and drama, The Penguin immerses viewers deep in the murky criminal underworld of Gotham City.
