Cathay Holidays invites you on a seven-day, six-night journey through Yunnan province and Chengdu, Sichuan, blending wine, whisky and culinary experiences. Designed exclusively for Cathay Pacific’s Cathay members, this itinerary offers access to two of our distinguished partners, delivering encounters and tastings that celebrate the region’s cultural and gastronomic heritage.
At the heart of this odyssey is a visit to The Chuan Malt Whisky Distillery. Conceived by Pernod Ricard and located in the foothills of Mount Emei, two hours from Chengdu, this masterpiece of distillery design represents a landmark in Chinese whisky craftsmanship.
Revered for its sherry-cask richness and indigenous Chinese wood spice, The Chuan’s signature malt is matured in a trio of oak casks: American bourbon, European sherry and Chinese Danling oak. You’ll gain an overview of the entire distillation process during an immersive 90-minute multimedia tour, which blends art and architecture against incredible mountain scenery. You’ll also meet master distiller Dr Yang Tao, who’ll lead premium whisky and new make spirit tastings.
You’ll experience The Yan restaurant, which offers an avant-garde fine dining journey at the distillery. Here, tasting menu dishes meld whisky-making techniques, such as fermentation and ageing, with Sichuan flavours and regionally sourced produce, including grass-fed yak.
This journey begins in the earthly paradise of Shangri-La. Ao Yun, Cathay Pacific’s wine partner and a jewel in the Moët Hennessy portfolio, is nestled beneath the Meili Snow Mountains and upholds viticultural traditions introduced in 1898. Over a dinner of Yunnan cuisine, Zhongli Ma, Ao Yun’s general manager, will host a wine tasting, offering insight into the region’s terroir.
You’ll stay at selected properties from the Songtsam hotel group in Yunnan province and The Temple House in Chengdu, ensuring exceptional hospitality on your journey.
In Chengdu, you’ll savour Michelin-starred dining, experience an exhilarating bian lian, or face-changing performance, and visit a panda research centre. In Yunnan, you’ll witness sunrise over Kawagarbo, the Meili Snow Mountains’ highest peak, and tour the fascinating Dukezong Ancient Town, a historic stopping point on the Tea Horse Road.
Members who reserve the Yunnan and Chengdu Wine and Dine Tour with Cathay Holidays before 13 August will receive a host of privileges during the trip, including private tastings, and the lead passenger will earn 30,000. Booking opens on 14 July; if you’re a Diamond or Gold member or co-branded cardholder, you’ll enjoy earlier booking access.
