Where to go for an adventure in Asia

    1. From Kathmandu: Gokyo Lakes trek

Picture an impossibly ice-blue glacial lake surrounded by jagged peaks and pockmarked by a blend of rock and uneven snow. That’s what awaits at your destination. Your journey begins on a well-maintained trail in Lukla, where you’ll catch early glimpses of Mount Everest before stopping at Namche Bazaar – a hub for trekkers venturing into the Himalayas. Having acclimatised to the altitude, you’ll encounter narrow suspension bridges, steep inclines, passing yak caravans and dynamic scenery. Wildlife, like the tahr, Himalayan monal or, more rarely, the snow leopard, may make an appearance.

    2. From Tokyo: Fujimi Panorama Resort Mountain Bike Park

Mountain bikers have 15 trails to explore at this bike park , whose summit is accessible by gondola and reveals sweeping views of Mount Fuji. The longest downhill run is 8km, with a 730m drop in elevation. The slope encompasses a variety of runs, from beginner and intermediate to advanced. There’s also a separate “skill improvement area”, which lets first-timers practice stress-free on gentler slopes.

    3. From Bali: diving in Nusa Penida

We’ve talked about the best places to go diving around the world before; now, here’s another destination to add to the list. Nusa Penida stands out as the only place with dive spots where you’re likely to see mola (sunfish) and regular appearances by manta rays. During peak diving season from June to November, the water is cooler, and visibility is optimal.

    4. From Surabaya: discover Mount Bromo

A sunrise Jeep tour is a popular way to enjoy an excursion to the mythical Indonesian landmark of Mount Bromo, bringing you there just in time to watch as the tented folds at the base of the active volcano slowly come into view, stained with red and purple. Once daylight reveals the landscape, embark on a hike up Mount Bromo to see the colossal, smoky crater. From the summit, you’ll also get views of the neighbouring peaks, plus the Sea of Sand on which they rest.

    5. From Hanoi: caving in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

If you’re into subterranean adventures, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is right up your alley. Expeditions into several of the park’s cave systems can take several days and involve camping along the trail, squeezing and crawling through tight tunnels, wading through underground rivers and staring at huge stalactites glinting in a shaft of light – a comforting reminder of the outside world. Fun fact: 2017’s Kong: Skull Island was partially filmed in the Tu Lan caves.

    6. From Phuket: cycling from Krabi to Koh Pha Ngan

On a rented hybrid bike, weave between cliffs carpeted with rainforests and small villages and watch as relaxing coastlines turn into dramatic peaks on a multi-day cycling trip through the centre of Phuket. Embark on a guided tour if you don’t want to worry about navigation, freeing you up to appreciate the tropical landscape (and the strenuous workout) to the fullest.
