Keeping your complexion in tip-top condition all year round can feel like a challenge: your skin’s needs change according to the seasons, which can in turn throw off even the most finely-tuned skin care routine. What works perfectly in the summer might not apply in colder months, and vice versa. As we transition from summer to winter, here are some tips for keeping your skin looking and feeling great year-round.

Combat dryness with hyaluronic acid
As the humidity drops, we often feel it in our face, with dull, tight and sometimes itchy skin. During cooler months, it’s important to protect our skin from the elements and keep it nourished – yes, even if you’re prone to oiliness. Make your first port of call a hyaluronic acid, which matches the naturally slightly acidic pH of our skin and is therefore very gentle and nourishing. It helps the skin to retain water, which in turn plumps it up, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while maintaining overall elasticity. Try Pretti5’s Advanced Hyaluronic Serum , packed with 12 botanicals to help soothe dry and irritated skin.
If your skin is very dry, you may also benefit from a product that helps to form a physical barrier over the skin, locking in moisture. However, be careful not to overuse these if your skin is prone to clogged pores. Look for ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter or squalene to keep your skin supple and nourished, like Sisley’s Black Rose Cream Mask , which contains soothing rose and magnolia oils and shea butter that help keep the skin soft.
Finally, avoid long, excessively hot showers. They may feel great on chilly mornings, but they will damage your skin’s protective layer of keratin over time, which in turn affects its natural ability to retain moisture.

Glow up with gentle exfoliation
Dull skin is all too common in cold weather, but with a little planning and TLC, you can get and maintain that glow no matter the season.
First of all, make sure to exfoliate regularly. This helps to shed dead skin and increase cell turnover to reveal a healthy, glowing complexion. These days, overzealous use of physical scrubs are considered too rough for your face, so try a chemical exfoliator instead. AHAs, such as glycolic acid, offer a gentler way of removing old skin cells, and perfectly prep your skin to absorb other products in your skincare routine, thus maximising their efficacy. SK-II's Facial Treatment Clear Lotion , for instance, is a watery toner that features both AHAs and its signature Pitera to help clarify and exfoliate the skin so you can better absorb the brand’s award-winning Facial Treatment Essence . You can also try BHAs such as salicylic acid, which penetrate deeper into the pores. Many products contain both AHAs and BHAs to double the effectiveness.
If you’d rather leave it to the pros, Beauskin also offers hydradermabrasion at its beauty centre: an exfoliating and deeply cleansing treatment, designed to lift impurities to leave you glowing.

Add a nourishing sheet mask to your routine
Sheet masks are also a great way of delivering a hit of nutrients deep into your skin. Use them once a week or before an important event to nourish your complexion. Look out for brightening ingredients such as peptides, niacinamide and glycolic acid, as well ashydrating ingredients including hyaluronic acid, aloe vera or squalane. Invest in a good suncream
Suncream is a must all year round, but as the weather gets warmer and we spend more time outdoors, it’s important to find a broad spectrum suncream that you can reapply throughout the day. Choose a product with a minimum 30 SPF that can protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. The former is what causes premature ageing, and the latter increases your likelihood of skin cancers, which is why you need protection from both. If you plan to swim in the sea, be sure to check your sunscreen’s ingredient list: chemicals such as oxybenzone, octinoxate or benzophenone have a damaging effect on coral reefs. Zinc-based sunscreens are much safer for marine life.

Control pigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is when your skin produces darkened spots in response to a variety of factors such as sun exposure, inflammation (for example, acne or insect bites) or hormonal changes. If you’re looking for a topical solution, skincare experts recommend applying products containing retinol, niacinamide or vitamin C, all of which are known to improve the appearance of dark spots by inhibiting melanin production. Lancôme’s Clarifique range is all about boosting skin translucency and treating hyperpigmentation with ingredients such as niacinamide.

Treatments for pigmentation
If you’re looking for a faster and more high-tech solution, you could also try microdermabrasion, a deep exfoliating treatment in which the top layer of skin is buffed off, revealing new, healthy skin underneath. Laser treatments are also known to be effective at removing unwanted pigmentation and at Beauskin, its medical-grade Fotona Starwalker All-Rounded Laser is especiallly targeted for these concerns. Stubborn acne scars also don’t stand a chance against laser resurfacing treatments, such as the Acne Scars Treatment at Beauskin, which works to improve the appearance and texture of your skin. Popular laser treatment names to look for include Picoway and Stellafsr M22. Make sure to consult a doctor first to ensure it’s the right treatment for you.
