The home of Tsingtao beer, as well as a centre of fresh seafood, European architecture and stunning beaches, Qingdao is an ancient city that wears its modernity proudly. I's also a shopper’s paradise – from historic alleyways and bustling night markets to high-end shopping malls, we’ve highlighted the best places for you to explore on your next visit to this bustling maritime city.

    1. Silverfish Lane

This charming alley is rich in heritage and today, it’s a prime example of the local government's effort to protect and revitalise Qingdao’s historic downtown areas. Here, among the throngs of young people, you’ll find traditional houses transformed into trendy boutiques selling everything from vintage clothes to second-hand books.

    2. Daxue Road

Nestled between Ocean University and Qingdao’s busy downtown lies a treasure trove of retro accessories, vintage clothing stores, and old books and journals. Soak up the poetic and historic charm as you browse Qingdao shops like Duozhuayu. As you do on many of these historic shopping streets here, keep an eye out for the creative murals that adorn the walls.

    3. New 100 Creative Culture Industrial Park

This industrial park on Nanjing Road is an arts hub that boasts an assortment of galleries, cafés and fashion boutiques – including Zanyi Gallery and Bushi Bookstore. The area hosts occasional pop-up markets and bazaars that champion local creatives, as well as music performances, and it is also well-known for its impressive display of large murals.

    4. Zhongshan Road

Built in 1897, Zhongshan Road is affectionately known as “mother street” and is lined on both sides with European-style architecture. It’s home to centuries-old shops including Shengxifu Hat Store. At the same time, the local government is trying to court younger visitors with immersive experiences. For a taste of Qingdao as a maritime centre, look out for the dried seafood stores.

    5. Licun Night Market

Like many great cities, Qingdao really comes alive when the sun goes down, and nothing is quite as spectacular as the neon-lit Licun Night Market. Every day around 5pm, hawkers set up stalls selling sweet and savoury delicacies – from grilled squid and snail noodles to juicy golden beef patties. The market also has a hidden gem for keen shoppers: an escalator that takes you down to a two-story underground mall.

    6. Sanjiang Li

Sanjiang Li is another beautiful example of Qingdao’s revitalised neighbourhoods that represents a seamless marriage of past and present. It was once home to Sanjiang Guild Hall, as well as a number of old theatres. Today, there’s plenty to explore in this unique heritage setting – from old bookstores and handicrafts to bakeries and cafés. Find a tranquil courtyard and pass the time with a cup of tea.

After all those old heritage lanes and streets, change the pace and explore Qingdao’s modern side. The five-storey GT Plaza Qingdao is the city’s latest epicentre of dining, entertainment, shopping and lifestyle. International brands like COSCIA and Karl Lagerfeld can be found alongside homegrown names such as UIXIU, tazaTe, BadMarket, MOF and more. The mall also holds concerts and cultural bazaars.
