Hangzhou’s famous freshwater West Lake has inspired poets and writers since the Tang Dynasty, and one of the best ways to experience its splendour is to stay at the Four Seasons Hangzhou West Lake. The resort was built to resemble a lakeside village, with rooms and suites nestled among tranquil gardens adjacent to the lake. The hotel even has its own jetty, from which you can explore the lake by boat. Alternatively, hop on a bike and check out the nearby sights – from the Leifeng Pagoda to the spectacular Tang Dynasty-era Broken Bridge.

There are a number of former-palaces-turned-hotels in Rajasthan, but the Taj Lake Palace is arguably the most famous. Built in the 1700s, it’s located on an island in the middle of Udaipur’s Lake Pichola. Formerly the summer residence of the Mewar royal family, it was converted into a luxury hotel in the 1960s. The hotel has retained its palatial feel, with gilded archways, rose- and pistachio-coloured walls, and oriental carpets on marble-tiled floors that make every room a riot of splendid colour.

One of Switzerland’s legendary hotels, Badrutt’s Palace has sat on the banks of Lake St. Moritz since 1896. This grand property is renowned not only for its after-ski activities, but also for its array of summer activities. In the summer, the alpine meadows are lush and green, perfect to explore on foot, bike or horseback. After a long day of adventuring, check out the spa’s incredible views or book a meal at one of the hotel’s excellent restaurants – our favourite is Le Relais, known for its Belle Epoque-inspired dining room and classic French dishes.

This award-winning family-run hotel is split into two properties: the hotel has 30 rooms as well as a spa for an afternoon of relaxation, but if you prefer a more classic countryside estate, the nearby lake house is set on 100 acres of private grounds with its own lake. Once you’re done swimming or exploring the nearby attractions, make sure to see and be seen at Da Giacomo Al Lago, the hotel’s buzzy alfresco restaurant.
