Simply pay a modest fee or redeem your Asia Miles to purchase an extra legroom seat for an even more comfortable journey.

Fly with extra legroom in Economy

If you need more leg space when you fly, you can stretch out with our extra legroom seats in Economy* – available for an additional fee starting from HKD350/USD45^ to HKD1,650/USD212^, depending on the origin and destination of your flight. You can also redeem a seat with your Asia Miles starting from 6,500 miles.

Passengers holding Economy Flex fares# can reserve their extra legroom seats free of charge.

Reserving an extra legroom seat


  • Choose an extra legroom seat when you book with us online or through your travel agent.
  • After booking a flight with us, you can log in to Manage Booking to reserve an extra legroom seat up to 24 hours before your flight departure time.
  • During online check-in up to 90 minutes before your flight departure time. (Please note: If you are any Cathay member, or oneworld Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald member, priority online check-in will be open from 48 hours before your flight departure time for all passengers in your booking. Otherwise, online check-in opens from 24 hours before your flight departure time.)
  • Alternatively, call Customer Care or your travel agent after your ticket is issued, at least 24 hours before you fly.
  • You can also book at our in-town or airport check-in counters.

Please note: Members must have sufficient Asia Miles at the time of redemption.

*Reserve your seat is only available for Cathay Pacific issued tickets (ticket number starts with 160) on Cathay Pacific operated flights. Seats are subject to availability and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Passengers must meet the exit row safety requirements stated on this page.

^The charge is paid in the local currency equivalent based on the exchange rate at the point of sale on the date of purchase. Bookings from certain points of sale, including India, may incur a sales tax.

Extra legroom seats are located near the emergency exit doors*, and are subject to flight safety guidelines of the Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong.

A passenger may be assigned an extra legroom seat if he/she meets the following safety requirements, and will not obstruct emergency exits in a way of impeding the crew in their duties, obstructing access to emergency equipment, or hindering aircraft evacuation.

Passengers occupying an extra legroom seat must:

  • Be at least 12 years of age at the commencement of the journey, whether accompanied or not
  • Not be seated with an infant
  • Be able to understand and carry out cabin crew safety instructions
  • Not be under the influence of intoxicating substances or drugs
  • Not require the use of an extension seat belt
  • Not be a passenger with reduced mobility. This includes a passenger:
    • Travelling with a guide dog / assistance dog or using a mobility aid during boarding such as a wheelchair, walking stick or Postural Support Equipment (PSE)
    • Who is either vision or hearing impaired to the extent that they might not readily assimilate
    • Who requires the use of an oxygen bottle or Medical Portable Electronic Device (MPED)

If a passenger does not fulfil the above safety requirements, Cathay Pacific may re-assign a regular Economy seat before or during the journey without a refund of the extra legroom seat reservation fee.

Below are the aircraft types and extra legroom seats that are not near emergency exit doors.

  • Boeing 777-300 (77A): 40C
  • Boeing 777-300 (77K): 40C, 40H

Please ensure you change your flight together with your reserved extra legroom seat. If you have reserved and paid for an extra legroom seat but you have changed your flight online with us, please call Customer Care to arrange your extra legroom seat.

Extra legroom seats are non-transferrable and non-refundable, with some exceptions.

Cathay Pacific will issue a refund of extra legroom seat reservation fees if the seat is not utilised, under the following conditions:

  • If your flight changes due to disruption.
  • The flight is cancelled by Cathay Pacific Airways.
  • A connecting flight operated by Cathay Pacific is missed because of delay of a previous Cathay Pacific operated flight.
  • Your selected extra legroom seat is no longer available once you’ve changed to a different flight.
  • If your seat changed due to operational, safety, or security reasons and we are unable to offer you a suitable alternative seat.
  • If you choose to upgrade to a higher cabin class using Upgrade Bid, Asia Miles, or by paying the fare difference, on the same route.
  • If you choose to rebook an Economy fare type which is eligible for extra legroom seat reservation free of charge, on the same route.

Refunds can be requested within 14 days after your flight departure date, by either filling out our form online; or by contacting Customer Care. If the seat was redeemed using Asia Miles, please contact Customer Care. Refunds will be made in the currency and original form of payment used during purchase.

Please note: Customers who cancel their original booking without simultaneously rebooking another flight will not be entitled to a refund.

In the event that a refund is requested for a reserve your seat purchase, following a date when we have adjusted the amounts within fee by sector or the details within the type of flight, we will only grant a refund in the amount originally charged at the time of the reserve your seat purchase, and subject to our usual refund conditions as stated above.


  1. Reserve your seat allows Economy Class passengers to pay and reserve a regular seat or an extra legroom seat on flights operated by Cathay Pacific.
  2. Extra legroom seat selection is subject to availability upon request. The offer and seat charge is based on individual sector for each passenger.
  3. Passengers need to fulfil exit row safety requirements when occupying extra legroom seats. Exit row safety requirements are available on this page.
  4. Cathay Pacific has the sole discretion, at check-in or boarding, to determine whether a passenger meets the requirements to sit on an extra legroom seat. If a passenger does not fulfil the necessary safety requirements, Cathay Pacific may re-assign a regular Economy seat before or during the journey without refunding the extra legroom reservation fee.
  5. Extra legroom seat is available for ticketed passengers. Seat will be assigned only upon full payment collection. There are some exceptions in which the fee is not applied such as when the passenger is holding an Economy Flex fare#.
  6. Extra legroom seat selection is not applicable for unaccompanied minors, bookings with children and infant.
  7. No Asia Miles are rewarded for the amount paid for reserve your seat.
  8. Reserve your seat is non-transferable and non-reroutable. If a passenger decides to rebook the flight/date, extra legroom seat payment can be transferred to the new flight/date within the same booking. Note that reserve your seat purchases cannot be transferred to another origin, destination, booking, nor passenger.
  9. Please be aware that reserve your seat reservations will only be held until 20 minutes before the check-in counters close for your flight. Check-in counter closure times vary by destination; please refer to the airport information pages for further information. Any reserve your seat reservation that is not used will not be refunded.
  10. Reserve your seat is non-refundable except for the below scenarios where Cathay Pacific will issue a refund for the extra legroom seat if the seat is not utilised under the following conditions:
    • The flight is disrupted.
    • The flight is cancelled by Cathay Pacific Airways.
    • The connecting flight is missed because of the re-timing of an inbound or outbound flight operated by Cathay Pacific.
    • No extra legroom seat available on the new travel flight/date.
    • Passenger is upgraded to a higher cabin using Upgrade Bid, Asia Miles, or by paying the fare difference, on the same route.
    • Passenger rebooks to Economy Flex fares#, on the same route.

      Please contact Customer Care for refunds. Refunds will be made in the original form of payment after the request has been submitted.
  11. Extra legroom seats have certain characteristics, including the following specifications:
    • There is significantly more legroom than other seats in the Economy cabin.
    • Extra legroom seats are located near the emergency exit doors*.
    • Exit row seats are often near toilets or galleys, so there may be increased traffic at certain points during your flight.
    • Personal items and luggage must be stored in the overhead bins, as no under-seat or seatback storage is available.
    • The armrests between extra-legroom seats cannot be retracted because meal-trays are stowed in the arm-rest section.
    • Your personal TV must be stowed during taxi, take-off and landing.
    • Some seats may see a reduction in seat width due to the location of the personal TV handset.

  12. Cathay Pacific reserves the right to adjust the amount of the fee and revise these terms and conditions at any time without notice.
  13. In case of any discrepancy between the English version and any translated version of these terms and conditions, the English version shall prevail.
