Musical Instrument

Musical instruments carried as carry-on or check-in baggage must be kept inside a sturdy and protective hard case with rounded edges. Musical instruments in soft cases will not be accepted, and we will not provide hard cases.

Small musical instruments – such as a violin or a flute, within the size of 78 x 25 x 15 cm (31 x 10 x 6 in) (H x W x D) and within the weight of 7 kg (15 lb) inclusive of the hard case can be carried on board if it can be stowed safely inside the overhead locker. Please be prepared to check in the instrument if stowage space is not available. The instrument is considered part of your cabin baggage allowance.

Other musical instruments – such as guitars, exceeding the above limits or the cabin baggage allowance must be checked in as checked baggage.

If you want to purchase a seat for your musical instrument or other baggage items, please do not use our Online Booking service to book your tickets. Instead, contact our reservations office or your travel agent to make the booking, at least 3 working days prior to the scheduled departure date to allow time for us to facilitate the special handling, such as deployment of installation equipment.

Such items can only be accepted for carriage in the cabin compartment if you have given us notice in advance and permission has been granted by us. Dimension and weight limitations for a musical instrument on an extra seat are:

Dimensions Weigh

Musical instrument hard cases within the following dimensions can be fastened upright to an Economy Class seat:

  • Height (H) : 136 cm (54 in), measured by the height of the musical instrument hard case in vertical position.
  • Width (W) : 48 cm (19 in), measured by the width of the musical instrument hard case.
  • Depth (D) 1: 31 cm (12 in), measured by the thickness of the musical instrument hard case.

1 If the depth of the musical instrument hard case is between 31 cm (12 in) and 44 cm (17 in), the instrument is fastened in an upside-down position due to space constraints.

2 If you are connecting from other airlines, please check the weight allowed which can be different from Cathay Pacific’s weight allowance.

32 kg (70 lb)2, combined weight for the musical instrument and the hard case

Seats in the First and Business classes may be able to accommodate a musical instrument in an upright position or a musical instrument exceeding the common dimensions of 136 x 48 x 44 cm (54 x 19 x 17 in). Please contact our local office or your travel agent for details.

Note 1: A canvas bag is used to secure the musical instrument to the seat

Note 2: Due to temperature variations, expansion and contraction of the neck of stringed instruments may occur. Passengers are advised to have the strings loosened to avoid damage.
