    How to live a happier, healthier life: A guide to self-care for men

    The last couple of years haven’t exactly gone to plan and it’s safe to say we’ve all been left feeling a little run down and weary. But it’s time to forget the past and give yourself the care you deserve – and with Men’s Health Awareness Month here (and the new year in sight), there’s never been a better time for a little lifestyle rejuvenation. 

    From diet and grooming to exercise and mindfulness, there’s a multitude of ways we can improve our wellbeing. To help you navigate the (sometimes overwhelming) world of self-care for men, we’ve created this helpful guide to leading healthier, happier lives.

    Keep moving

    Exercise is important – but how much do you actually need to do? Generally speaking, 30 minutes or so a day of moderate exercise is enough to keep your body healthy, though this may need to be adapted if your aim is to lose weight or gain muscle mass. Don’t worry: this doesn’t need to be a flat-out 30-minute run. You can tailor your choice of workout to your own personal preference, be it yoga, a HIIT session, weight training, cycling or walking  and we’ve listed a few easy 15-minute exercises to try out here

    Perfect your grooming routine

    A good skincare routine shouldn’t simply plaster over the cracks of your lifestyle choices; it should help you offset them. There are plenty of products that claim to do this, but we suggest you start with the essentials: use a cleanser and toner every morning and evening to energise  your complexion; apply daily SPF moisturiser every morning to combat the effects of UV rays and pollution; and use a face mask once a week or so to help clear and rejuvenate your skin (especially after a few too many drinks).

    Eat and drink well

    The key to a healthy diet is balance and moderation, though that doesn’t automatically mean saying no to that huge plate of carbs. It’s important to foster a healthy relationship with food and not limit yourself, though there’s a difference between treating yourself every once in a while, and indulging in post-dinner snacking every evening. As a rule, try to stop eating three hours before bedtime to allow food to be digested properly before you go to bed, and drink six to eight cups of water a day to reap the benefits of healthy hydration.

    Get outside

    Never underestimate the healing properties of the outdoors – there’s more to it than a dose of fresh air and vitamin D. Being outside can provide an escape from the stresses of work and your personal life, helping to calm your mind, lower your blood pressure and sharpen your focus. You may also find that conversation flows more easily when you’re walking, making it a great social activity, too. So next time you catch up with a friend, skip the drinks and opt for a nice long amble instead.

    Practise mindfulness

    Looking good on the outside doesn’t count for much if you don’t feel good on the inside as well. Take time to appreciate your life: start by writing down three things you’re thankful for every day, you may be surprised by the impact it has. Another great hack is writing down the things that are stressing you out and then tossing them in the bin and getting on with your day. And finally, refocus your mind with a daily meditation – it only takes five minutes to feel the benefits.

    Treat yourself

    There are so many rules we’re told to follow in life that it’s important to give yourself a break every once in a while. Whether it’s a concert with mates, a weekend break with someone special or booking a relaxing massage for one, be kind to yourself and don’t feel guilty for it. Remember: life is to be enjoyed.
