    Among the most unique of the new hotels opening this year is a mysterious 19th century fort situated in Boka Bay which has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind place to stay. After painstaking and sympathetic restoration, this protected cultural and historical monument re-emerges as a bastion of hospitality in the Balkans. Working in harmony with the fortified stone walls that define the structure, the design across guest rooms, suites and amenities prioritises natural materials, plush textures and an overarching sense of minimalist calm. This tranquil destination is primed for the wellness-seeker, with a rooftop pool, spa, outdoor gym and running track, and plenty of numerous workshops and day trips to the mainland to join.

    The Aman lifestyle becomes a little more attainable this year, as the wellness-oriented luxury hotel brand launches one of the most eagerly awaited new hotels in Tokyo under its sister brand, Janu  . The jewel in the crown of the sophisticated new Azabudai Hills development, Janu is designed with the urban traveller in mind, and has easy links to popular areas like Shinjuku. It sits within a Japan’s tallest residential building and encompasses six restaurants and bars, a fitness centre and the expansive Janu Spa.

    The Homestead, South Africa

    This South African entry is set to shake up the safari lodge model, creating an experience that goes beyond catching a glimpse of the Big Five. Located in Nambiti Private Game Reserve, this contemporary eco-lodge is designed to blend into its surroundings and work in harmony with the natural environment, all while providing an ultra-luxury experience – from its service to its locally-sourced cuisine to its spa indulgences. Its 12 vibrant suites come with their own private decks and butlers, and there are daily game drives on offer for guests to see the abundant wildlife.

    Hospitality icon Intercontinental Hong Kong – now rebranded as Regent Hong Kong - opens its doors this year with a sleek new look created by local star architect Chi Wing Lo. Situated on the edge of Victoria Harbour, it’s a short walk from landmarks such as the Avenue of Stars, K11 Musea and the Star Ferry pier. A stay here wouldn’t be complete without sampling the Cantonese fine dining of the revered Lai Ching Heen, among the Regent’s four restaurants reopening this year.

    Indonesian resort Cap Karoso combines beachfront luxury with eco-conscious design. An hour’s flight from Bali, the property is situated on Sumba island’s Karoso Beach, and boasts rooms and beach villas featuring contemporary Parisian and local Marapu design elements. With traditional villages and pristine shores nearby, it’s a fantastic starting point to explore Sumba’s ancient Marapu culture. In keeping with the rising push for sustainability in the region, its eco-initiatives include 50 per cent of its energy needs coming from solar power, a zero-waste Beach Club, and an onsite farm which grows ingredients for the resort’s menus while giving back to the community through farming skill programmes.

    A decade after its arrival on the hospitality scene, Maison Pariente is set to open its first-ever Parisienne locale. With Le Grand Mazarin , the family-run French luxury hotel group puts down roots in the desirable Le Marais district. Each room’s design is sumptuous yet whimsical, pairing classically Parisian features with offbeat modern touches. As well as a hammam and swimming pool, there are two bars and a terraced restaurant at your disposal – perfect for retreating to after a day of sightseeing and shopping.

The hotel celebrates the property’s colourful history, especially that of its former proprietor, the Gilded Age socialite Charlotte Goodridge. Inside, you’ll be able to admire exquisite design, replete with starry art deco light fixtures, plush vintage furnishings, and a soft approach to playful colour palettes. True to the spirit of its former owner, the hotel aims to remain the destination for soirees, with a restaurant helmed by Andrew Carmellini and your pick of bars, from a dark wood speakeasy oozing with sensuality to a charming tearoom setting.

The original palatial structure dates back to the 1500s and once belonged to Italian nobility before it was transformed into a shrine to modern architecture designed with the sensual curvature its design team at Zaha Hadid Architect Studio is known for. Both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as numerous lounges and bars offer endless opportunities to recline, spritzer in hand.
