Whether you’re taking your newborn on their first trip abroad or jetting off on a family holiday with toddlers in tow, travelling internationally with an infant will test even the most experienced of parents. To help you prepare for a flight with little ones, we’ve compiled a list of useful tips and baby travel essentials to ensure a smooth, stress-free journey.

    1) Stay calm and pack a carry-on

The number one rule for flying with an infant? Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack all your baby’s travel essentials in a trusty diaper bag, well-stocked with everything your infant needs to be comfortable, fed, entertained and warm throughout the journey, especially in case of delays. We love this chic nappy backpack  for its insulated side bottle pockets, extra wide opening, and cushioned changing pad that comes complete with the pack. With changing tables available on your flight, this versatile backpack makes it quick and easy to find and grab whatever you need in a pinch.

    2) Go hands free with a baby carrier

Roam the airport freely (perhaps even squeeze in a little bit of duty-free shopping) and handle baggage with ease by keeping your little one in a baby carrier. Our favourite is the soft, easy-to-wash and easy-to-fold adjustable baby carrier from BabyBjörn. Suitable for newborns up to 12 months (or 11 kg), it provides ergonomic support for both baby and parent and features multiple carrying positions, so your baby can sleep comfortably snug on you or take in the sights as you roam.

    3) Request a bassinet and bring your own

Where there is an overtired baby, there is crying. To allow your baby (and you) to snooze soundly, try to schedule your flight during your little one’s nap – or bedtime where possible, and reserve a bassinet on board. To ensure the remainder of your journey remains just as restful after you land, we suggest bringing your own – we love the lightweight feel of Babyzen’s Yoyo bassinet . It’s easy to carry by hand and its breathable double mattress is like falling asleep in a hug. Setting it up couldn’t be easier: it clicks right onto the Yoyo foldable stroller frame , which is compact enough to fit into the overhead cabin for a quick getaway after your flight.

    4) Provide baby-friendly inflight entertainment

A happy baby makes for a happy flight experience for everyone. So, to ensure your little one stays cheerful, keep them engaged with age-appropriate toys, books, snacks and activities throughout the flight. These colourful stackable rings and plush dragon toys will keep your tot busy sorting, rolling and squeezing while working their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Avoid toys that can be easily dropped, misplaced or make loud sounds, and opt for colourful pieces that can be comfortably gripped in your baby’s hands.

    5) Keep the hanger at bay

While we provide meals for infants on all our flights, snacks are one of the most important travel essentials when travelling with a baby. Avoid having a hangry baby on board by packing your own food – especially when travelling long-haul. This colourful animal-themed insulated food jar keeps your baby’s food at a desired temperature (warm or chilled) for hours and comes with a built-in holder for utensils, making it perfect for enjoyable meals on-the-go.
