A little bit of background

This supercharged foam roller from Therabody combines vibration therapy with an innovative texture to deliver a full-body foam rolling experience that’s powerful and efficient. Its silicone wave grooves add extra pressure to muscles while providing better traction control. It’s also made with hypoallergenic, high-density foam for better sound insulation.

The Bluetooth-enabled device connects you to the Therabody app, giving you personalised routines that target specific muscle groups, relieve tension, reduce soreness and improve blood flow.

It comes with a charger and a sling bag with a drawstring closure, adjustable strap and a front pocket – handy for bringing to the gym or on wellness trips. It has a three-hour battery life, which you can check via the indicator light.

First impressions

Switching on the Wave Roller immediately activates the vibrations, and you can choose between five intensity levels before placing it on a yoga mat and applying light pressure to specific areas, such as your shins, quads and IT bands. I own a regular foam roller, but despite my physio’s constant reminders, I find the process taxing. But with the Wave Roller, I received more relief with less effort.

Curious about app integration, I explored its warm-up and post-workout recovery routines, which I hoped might expedite recovery from my runs. I also thought it might be beneficial to receive specific directions, including where to place the roller and how long to use it for in each area, to ensure I was using it correctly.

During setup, the app tailors recommendations based on your wellness goals, physical activities and concerns – which may include reducing muscle soreness and pain, managing stress and getting better sleep. You can also filter routines by body part, from your back and shoulders to your head and neck, as well as find ways to recover from jet lag. When going through the almost endless routines, you can easily tap the Save button from a routine overview to find it later in your Saved tab.

I found the app intuitive and the routines clear most of the time, with diagrams showing you where to position the roller and how to move your body. After the timer runs out on an individual step, the screen moves on to the next routine, ensuring that you don’t overdo it in any one area.

Any cons?

When you start a routine, the roller begins vibrating and the timer starts before you can preview the first step, so I constantly had to pause and reset. A few of the diagrams were also unclear. Rather than relying only on arrows, short videos would greatly improve guidance.

Final thoughts

More effective than a standard foam roller, this smart recovery tool -especially when paired with the Therabody app – makes pain relief, warm-ups and post-exercise recovery quick and effortless, so you can focus on actually getting out there and enjoying your day.
