Located in the western part of the Pearl River Delta, Jiangmen is considered a gateway to the Greater Bay Area. To date, close to 4 million members of Chinese diaspora around the world – including tycoon Lui Che-woo, celebrities Andy Lau and Chow Yun-fat, as well as ex-NBA star Yi Jianlian – can trace their roots back to Jiangmen.

Aside from its proud history in foreign trade and commercial activity, Jiangmen is also now home to manufacturing in fields such as information technology, new energy and health materials. The city's futuristic developments are juxtaposed with over 3000 ancient diaolou – or watchtowers – some of which are even recognised with Unesco world heritage status. Originally built to protect residents from bandits, these multi-storied fortified defensive structures of the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages heritage area beautifully integrate Chinese architectural themes with Western forms.

Travellers can dive deep into the city‘s culture and history at one of its many museums. Stop by Hengkeng Village (otherwise known as the rainbow village) to snap a picture for the ‘gram, get a breath of fresh air amid the urban landscape at the wetland Donghu Park, soak in the Gudou hot springs, or venture further from the city to explore the verdant hills of the Guifeng Mountain National Forest Park.

There’s plenty to do in this gem of a city, located less than 120km from Hong Kong. Here’s how to make your way there.
