
For decades, pilots carried a “flight bag” – a robust case filled with briefing documents, weather charts and manuals for every journey, often weighing up to 70kg. Then the introduction of the electronic flight bag – a single tablet device storing the same information in digital form – allowed pilots to switch from kilograms to gigabytes, instantly cutting paper waste, excess weight and emissions.
Now another upgrade is underway. As General Manager Operations Captain James Toye explains, the next step is to harness inflight Wi-Fi, giving pilots access to real-time intelligence as they fly.
“We want to relay the best available information and tools to our crews, so that they can make the best available decisions on the ground and in flight.”
Aviation, of course, predates the internet. For years, communication relied on radio, satellite links and basic text messaging systems, meaning crews often departed with information that gradually lost relevance en route.
“A passenger tracking the flight on an aviation app might see real-time snapshots of surrounding traffic or weather – that’s more information than the captain has in flight, when they’re working from a briefing that’s several hours old,” says Captain Toye.


It’s precisely this gap that connectivity is designed to close. Under our new subsidiary, Cathay Technologies, we’ve developed an exciting new product: the Electronic Flight Folder (EFF), a platform that builds on decades of operational expertise and digital innovation.
“It combines multiple systems and all kinds of real-time and acquired data,” says Captain Toye.
Through the EFF, pilots can access live weather maps and a suite of practical tools, while an integrated messaging system links everyone involved in a flight – from airport teams to crew and operations control. “It’s a game-changer,” says Line Operations Manager Captain Tony Pringle. “From within the EFF, pilots can launch a comprehensive weather app produced by the Hong Kong Observatory that provides forecasts and real-time weather and turbulence data.
The potential is great, though careful design remains essential. During critical phases of flight, unnecessary alerts can be distracting. Developed with direct input from pilots, the EFF avoids this. “It would irritate the crew to have constant pop-ups,” says Captain Toye. “The EFF inhibits messages when the aircraft is taxiing, climbing or in the descent.”
