Online Traveller Declaration

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has introduced a new Online Traveller Declaration requirement, effective 1 July 2026, for all travellers including South African citizens entering or departing South Africa via air, land, sea, or rail.

What You Need to Know

Travellers are now required to complete an online declaration before travelling. This declaration must include details of:

  • Goods in their possession
  • Currency being carried
  • Any other items that may require a customs declaration

Information Required

To complete the declaration, travellers should have the following information available:

  • Passport details
  • Travel information and itinerary details
  • Contact information
  • Travel companion details (where applicable)
  • Company/entity details for business travel

Important Traveller Guidance

A declaration is required for every traveller, including children and infants.

  • Once the declaration has been submitted, travellers will receive an email confirmation containing customs instructions.
  • Travellers should save or print the confirmation and keep it accessible throughout their journey.
  • Travellers who are unable to complete the declaration before departure will still be permitted to travel and may obtain assistance from SARS Customs officials at the relevant port of entry.

How to Complete the Declaration

Travellers can submit their declaration using:

  • The SARS Traveller Declaration Portal >>Click Here
  • The South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) App
  • The SARS MobiApp

To avoid delays and ensure a smoother travel experience, travellers are encouraged to complete the declaration as early as possible before their departure.
