The Running Man

Since Stephen King’s The Running Man was published in 1982, the “dystopian contest” genre has ballooned. So it’s fitting that the novel has now inspired a new film adaptation, starring Glen Powell as Ben Richards, the good guy forced to compete in a deadly TV show to support his family. As a Runner, he must survive for 30 days while being pursued relentlessly by assassins. An action thriller laced with wry comedy, The Running Man (Movie, Action/Adventure) is in equal parts eerie and entertaining.

If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You

Psychological drama If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You (Movie, Drama) proves that real life can be stranger, darker and scarier than fiction. This deep-dive into the daily struggles of a woman exhausted by the demands of work and childcare is disorientating, stress-inducing – and wholly relatable. Rose Byrne gives a first-rate performance as Linda, the central protagonist whose life and sanity are slowly unravelling, and her character’s spiral will keep you hooked until the very last frame.

Left-Handed Girl

Writer-director Shih-Ching Tsou presents a tale that is at once gritty and sentimental in Left-Handed Girl (Movie, Drama). Told largely from the perspective of five-year-old I-Jing (Nina Ye), the film follows I-Jing, her mother Shu-Fen (Janel Tsai) and older sister I-Ann (Shih-Yuan Ma) as they begin building a new life in Taipei working at a night market. Shu-Fen is riddled with anxiety; I-Ann is brooding with resentment; and the wide-eyed, impressionable I-Jing tries to find her own way to support the family.

Resurrection

Resurrection (Movie, Drama), Bi Gan’s fantasy epic, is set in a future where most of humanity has given up the ability to dream, save for an errant few known as Deliriants. Miss Shu (Shu Qi) is employed to track down these beings and destroy them; yet on discovering a Deliriant (Jackson Lee) with extraordinary gifts, Miss Shu instead installs a film projector inside him. What follows is a journey through six dreams, evoking both key periods of Chinese history and distinct styles of filmmaking – surreal, enigmatic and visually resplendent.

This month, take a dive into our Hidden Gems category to discover a wealth of lesser-known films from around the world. Films like Petite Maman (Movie, Drama), a beautiful fantasy-inflected tale from the creator of Portrait of a Lady on Fire that revolves around three generations of women. For an action film with an emotional core, watch A Perfect Day (Movie, Thriller), in which a group of aid workers in a war zone attempt to carry out a mission while battling against time, red tape and the elements. There’s also Swiss Army Man (Movie, Comedy), an absurd comedy about a man stranded on an island (Paul Dano) who finds and befriends a reanimated dead body (Daniel Radcliffe), with their joint escapades leading to an unexpectedly poignant revelation. Park Chan-wook’s wickedly dark comedy-thriller offers a timely commentary on present-day work culture. Man Soo (the always charismatic Lee Byung-hun) loses both his livelihood and life’s meaning when, after 25 years as a dedicated employee, he is abruptly laid off from his job. Desperate to secure another position, he resorts to extreme, cutthroat means to get ahead in a competitive job market. Witty and entertaining even as it moves and unsettles you, No Other Choice (Movie, Thriller) is requisite viewing.

The Housemaid

The lavish mansion of a wealthy couple harbours unsavoury secrets in The Housemaid (Movie, Thriller). Millie (Sydney Sweeney) is a young woman in dire straits when she is offered a job as a housemaid for Nina and Andrew Winchester (Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar). However, disturbing occurrences make this seeming lifeline begin to look increasingly like a trap. Incredible twists and turns add a delicious dose of melodrama to this psychological thriller, which is further bolstered by the performances of its three leads.

Tulsa King S3

When loyal mafia henchman Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) is released from prison following a 25-year sentence, he’s shocked to be immediately sent out of New York and tasked with establishing new criminal connections in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Suspecting he has been sidelined by his boss, Manfredi begins amassing his own power. Season 3 of Tulsa King (TV, Drama) sees Manfredi go up against a whisky magnate and Tulsa’s most elite family, with Stallone bringing a mix of grit and dry humour to the popular series.

True-to-life drama The Queen of News (TV, Drama) brings viewers into the high-stakes world of journalism. Man Wai-sum (Charmaine Sheh) is a successful TV anchor who must fend off constant threats from rival anchors to retain her title of “the Queen of News”. While season one saw Wai-sum rise to a top executive position only to step down in a shocking twist, season two opens with her taking over a digital media company, setting the stage for a fresh power struggle between traditional and emerging news platforms.

100 Meters

Mesmerising anime 100 Meters (Movie, Animation) tells a story of friendship and rivalry between two sprinters. Togashi is his school’s undisputed track star, naturally gifted and effortlessly successful. New classmate Komiya has none of Togashi’s skill but possesses all the drive and determination his friend lacks. Years later, the pair meet again as competitors. Overlaying live action footage with hand-drawn animation, 100 Meters brings its running sequences vividly to life while staying true to the core tenets of the animating craft.

Sons of the Neon Night

Juno Mak’s fantastical crime thriller Sons of the Neon Night (Movie, Drama) takes place in an alternative Hong Kong: bleak, snowy and unlawful. The film opens with a shocking explosion that kills the city’s drug kingpin. Moreton (Takeshi Kaneshiro) is next in line to assume power, but faces a slew of rivals – not least among them his own brother Maddox (Alex To). A wealthy music mogul has his morals tested in Spike Lee’s frenetic, darkly humorous Highest 2 Lowest (Movie, Thriller). David King (Denzel Washington) is the multimillionaire founder of Stackin’ Hits Records. To crown his success, he plans to put all his wealth into regaining a controlling interest in the record label. Then he gets a chilling call: kidnappers have taken Kyle, son of David’s right-hand man and best friend to David’s own son, Trey. King is forced to consider what he values more: his legacy, or human life.

One Battle After Another

Golden Globe winner for Best Motion Picture, and recipient of 13 Academy Award nominations, One Battle After Another (Movie, Drama) stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob, a former radical activist whose past catches up with him. With his revolutionary days behind him, he now lives off-grid, reclusive and paranoid, with his teenage daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). Despite his discretion, he is tracked down by an old enemy, the ruthless army officer Colonel Lockjaw (Sean Penn). It’s a plot both serious and absurd, held together by an emotional, father-daughter narrative core.

The Stage

Light-hearted period drama The Stage (Movie, Drama) sees an opera troupe deliver a show to remember – but not in quite the way they had envisioned. Rolling into a Beijing run by warlords, Hou Xi Ting (Chen Pei Si, also the film’s director) and his performers prepare to impress at the city’s famed Dexiang Theater. The stakes are high; so naturally, things immediately begin to go awry. From missing stars to mistaken identities, The Stage is a classic comedy of errors and a tribute to the world of theatre.

All Her Fault S1

In All Her Fault, (TV, Drama) Marissa Irvine (Sarah Snook) has all her greatest fears realised when her son Milo goes missing after school one day. She and husband Peter (Jake Lacy) begin a desperate search, led by Detective Alcaras (Michael Pena) and aided by new friend Jenny (Dakota Fanning). Yet as Alcaras works with the group to locate Milo, he uncovers secrets and past events each has been hiding. Snook and Pena are standouts among the show’s ensemble cast, helping to ground the story in believability.

Bugonia

The Academy Award-nominated Bugonia (Movie, Thriller) is a darkly satirical look at the power of conspiracy theories. Teddy (Jesse Plemons) is convinced that aliens are controlling humanity. After leading his cousin Don (Aidan Delbis) to the same conviction, he hatches a plan to kidnap the rich and powerful CEO of a major pharmaceutical company (Emma Stone), whom he believes to be one of the aliens in command. Part sci-fi, part thriller, the film is sprinkled with comedic moments, seamlessly integrated by its talented leads.

The Lychee Road

In Tang dynasty drama The Lychee Road (Movie, Drama), director and star Da Peng brings his signature tongue-in-cheek humour to a historical setting. He plays Li Shande, a lowly government official who is tricked into undertaking a doomed mission: to deliver fresh lychees all the way from Lingnan to Chang’an – a journey of 2,500km – in just eleven days. The whirlwind caper through mountain, desert, grassland and jungle is packed with improbable scenarios and fun cameos by Da Peng’s comedy pals.

The Paper

Fans of The Office  who can’t stop revisiting old episodes finally have something new to sink their teeth into. Spinoff mockumentary The Paper (TV, Comedy) follows a team of journalists at The Toledo Truth Teller, whose idealistic new editor Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) believes he can turn the failing Ohio newspaper around. The show features a first-rate ensemble cast, and with a similar mix of deadpan humour, absurdity and warmth, The Paper goes a long way towards living up to its beloved predecessor.

Great Wines in the Clouds: Ao Yun

Arriving in a remote region of Yunnan and surveying the magnificent mountain scenery around him, expert winemaker Maxence Dulou knew he had found the perfect spot to establish Ao Yun, China’s first wine estate in the Himalayas. His mission? To create an exquisite grand cru at high altitude. A Cathay Pacific Original production, Great Wines in the Clouds: Ao Yun (Movie, Documentary) charts this journey from planting to tasting. Finally, it sees the wine reach still greater heights as the latest addition to Cathay Pacific’s award-winning inflight cellar.

The Smashing Machine

Sports biopic The Smashing Machine (Movie, Drama) sees Dwayne Johnson deliver a Golden Globe-nominated performance as American wrestler and MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Though set during the height of Kerr’s fame and success in the late 1990s, this film is more interested in the man behind the machine, exploring his struggle with substance abuse and volatile relationship with his girlfriend, Dawn (Emily Blunt). By spotlighting Kerr’s battle outside the ring, The Smashing Machine delivers a grounded story with universal appeal.

F1^®: The Movie

Adrenaline levels are high in F1^®: The Movie (Movie, Action/Adventure), which sees a racing has-been get a second shot at glory. Sonny (Brad Pitt) was a rising F1 star in the ’90s until a near-fatal accident ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s convinced by an old friend to help rescue a failing Formula 1 team. With cameos from real F1 racers and scenes shot during actual Grand Prix races, this film will delight both casual and fervent fans of the sport.

WestK in the Sky

As WestK’s official travel partner, Cathay has teamed up with the arts and culture hub to create WestK in the Sky (TV, Docuseries), a six-part series delving into WestK’s iconic spaces and events. Tour M+ and its diverse art collections with museum director Suhanya Raffel; follow style expert Karen Mok as she explores French fashion through the ages at Hong Kong Palace Museum; and take a look at some of the incredible performances at Freespace Jazz Fest, WestK’s spirited annual music event.

Roofman

Proving that real life is stranger than fiction, Roofman (Movie, Comedy) tells the incredible true story of Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), an escaped convict who spent several months hiding in a toy department store. A former soldier, Jeffrey uses his survival skills to remain undetected. But when he begins mixing with the local community and falls for kind-hearted single mum Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), his secret becomes harder to conceal. Tatum and Dunst are as likeable as ever in this surprisingly wholesome drama.

Taxi Driver Season 3

Back for a third season, hit Korean series Taxi Driver (TV, Drama) follows the exploits of Kim Do-ki (Lee Je-hoon), driver-slash-vigilante. A highly skilled former soldier who is haunted by the murder of his mother, Do-ki helps others get justice where he couldn’t for himself, as a member of the elusive Rainbow Taxi Company. Season three brings more compelling story arcs and sees Hong Kong’s very own Edan Lui join the cast as an ally – albeit a questionable one – for the Rainbow gang.
