In Vancouver, an enduring love for the great outdoors is reflected in myriad aspects of daily life, including the way people dress. The city boasts a street style that leans heavily towards premium athleisure and outdoor wear, so it’s no surprise that it’s the birthplace of household names such as Lululemon and Arc’teryx.

But Vancouver’s shopping scene goes well beyond yoga pants and technical jackets. Canada’s third largest city is a patchwork of diverse neighbourhoods, people and cultures – and with that comes a wide spectrum of style. Whatever you’re looking for, there’s likely a corner of the city that feels tailor-made for you.

Here are a few of Vancouver’s best shopping destinations for a dose of retail therapy.

1. Granville Island

Formerly an industrial centre built on reclaimed land in 1916, Granville Island is now a lively hub devoted to arts, culture and entertainment. More than 300 businesses have taken up residence, spanning restaurants, cafés, bars, performance venues, art galleries and shops galore.

At the heart of it all is the Granville Island Public Market, a sprawling indoor market housing over 50 food vendors. You’ll find everything from farm-grown produce and fresh sushi to local favourites like gourmet Nanaimo dessert bars and Hobbs Pickles. Beyond the market, wander through the Net Loft shopping complex and the Artisan District for Indigenous art, independent bookstores, locally made homewares, and more. Families, meanwhile, will want to check out the Kids Market, which features toy shops, bumper cars, arcade games and an indoor playground.

Pro tip: Granville Island is also home to a boutique hotel that’s seriously underrated, especially considering its waterfront views and central location.

2. Commercial Drive

For a taste of Vancouver’s offbeat side, head to Commercial Drive – affectionately known as “the Drive” – in East Van. This extended thoroughfare is a longtime favourite among the city’s alternative crowd, drawn to its mix of thrift shops, dive bars and hole-in-the-wall dining gems. The neighbourhood is also packed with speciality food stores – and, as Vancouver’s Little Italy, it’s home to some of the city’s best Italian eats, from Michelin-recommended Magari by Oca to deli sandwich institution La Grotta Del Formaggio.

Start near Venables Street and spend the day strolling south toward East Broadway, popping into local favourites like Painted Lady Records for vinyl, Raven’s Veil for crystals and tarot cards, and Attic Treasures for vintage mid-century modern homewares. Cap things off with an evening screening at the Rio Theatre, a retro cinema known for indie films and cult classics – complete with local beer available at the concession.

3. Gastown

Vancouver’s historic downtown district, Gastown displays its cobblestone streets and Victorian architecture proudly. It’s also one of the city’s best neighbourhoods for shopping, offering everything from high-end boutiques and designer label branches to pay-per-pound thrift shops and unapologetically kitschy gift stores. Those in search of thoughtfully curated fashion will appreciate boutiques like Neighbour, Roden Gray, The Block and Artemisia, while internationally known brands such as Stüssy and Maison Kitsuné are also dotted throughout the area.

For something distinctly local, head to Makers , a shop featuring goods handmade exclusively by Vancouver artisans, who keep 100 per cent of their sales.

4. Robson Street + CF Pacific Centre

Delivering a classic high-street shopping experience, Robson Street is Vancouver’s most iconic retail corridor. Stretching between Burrard and Jervis, it’s a true one-stop destination where just about every type of chain store can be found. You’ll find flagship locations for Canadian favourites like Roots, Lululemon, and Arc’teryx, alongside popular high-street brands such as Aritzia, Zara, and Club Monaco and luxury labels including Gucci, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany & Co.

Robson Street also feeds directly into CF Pacific Centre , a major downtown mall that further expands the area’s retail mix. Inside, you’ll find everything from beauty giant Sephora and fast-fashion staple H&M to a Holt Renfrew department store.

5. Main Street

The best of Vancouver’s secondhand shopping scene can be found on Main Street in Mount Pleasant. The lively strip is packed with curated vintage parlours, thoughtfully edited secondhand shops, and classic dig-through-it-all thrift stores, ensuring that an afternoon of browsing ends with a one-of-a-kind treasure. Standout stops include Mintage Mall, Bohemia Gallery, The Main Exchange and Hunter & Hare.

Main Street is equally known for its trendy boutiques, where local and international fashion shares space with covetable home décor and high-end beauty. Hey Jude, Nouvelle Nouvelle and 8th & Main are regular haunts for Vancouver’s style-conscious when a wardrobe refresh is in order.

Between shops, you’re never far from something good to sip or snack on, thanks to a wealth of cafés, microbreweries and natural wine bars. When evening rolls around, follow the neon glow to The Shameful Tiki Room, a cult-favourite tiki bar decked in Polynesian décor and serving vintage-inspired cocktails.
