From high above Niagara Falls, it’s as if the clouds have descended to rest on top of a jagged azure depression in the ground, and all is peaceful. But from ground level, you can’t escape the roar of the unfathomable torrent of water plunging into the basin. The scene transforms again at night, when illuminations bathe the waterfalls in hues of red, orange and yellow.
The Falls, as it’s often called, is around a two hours’ drive south of Toronto and is known for its three spectacular waterfalls – Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the American Falls – the latter two lying entirely within the state of New York. You can see them for free any time throughout the year. Beyond sightseeing, the surrounding areas offer myriad ways to explore, from cycling trails and boat cruises to thrilling ziplines and boutique hotels boasting panoramic views.

By bus
Niagara Airbus

Niagara Airbus is a stellar option, with its flexible stops and seamless door-to-door service. Travel directly from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Niagara Falls, or let them cover each leg of your trip – from the airport to Toronto’s city centre to Niagara Falls and back. When booking, you can choose to be dropped off at a specific address, a hotel or the Niagara Airbus terminus. For added comfort, there’s also the option of taking a private car instead of a shared shuttle, with the driver assisting with your bags. Want to truly take your hands off the wheel? Add on a guided tour package for either the waterfalls or the Niagara wine region.
Flixbus
Estimated journey time: 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes
If you enjoy the journey as much as the destination, Flixbus boasts onboard perks you’ll appreciate. These include free Wi-Fi, power outlets, extra legroom, reclining seats, bag storage, toilets and even bicycle spots. Buses depart from Union Station Bus Terminal in downtown Toronto and head directly to one of three stops at Niagara Falls.
Megabus
Estimated journey time: 1 hour 35 minutes
Like Flixbus, Megabus equips its buses with attractive features that promises an enjoyable experience. It’s also the fastest of the bus options. Reclining seats, toilets and power outlets aside, the company also offers reserved seating with varying perks – choose from front row upper deck seats with panoramic views or seats with a small table to place drinks, laptops, books and more. Board at Union Station Bus Terminal and alight at Niagara Falls Bus Terminal.
Go Transit
Estimated journey time: around 3 hours from the airport
Go Transit , the public transport provider for the Greater Toronto area, also offers a bus route to Niagara Falls. However, it doesn’t depart from Toronto city centre. Route 12 starts at the park-and-ride at Dundas Street on Highway 407 in Burlington, less than an hour south of Toronto, and ends at Niagara Falls Bus Terminal. The bus journey takes around one hour 40 minutes and is an hourly service. If you’re departing straight from Toronto Pearson International Airport, route 40 will bring you to the Dundas Street terminus in about 50 minutes.

By train
Estimated journey time: 2 hours 30 minutes
Go Transit also provides a train service across the Greater Toronto area. The Lakeshore West route takes you from Union Station to Niagara Falls, with stops in between and no transfers. On weekdays, there are three trips connecting Toronto to Niagara Falls, while on weekends, there are four. Be sure to check for any travel alerts , as delays or detours may affect service.

The best time to visit and what to know about the weather
Dreaming of a winter wonderland? In the colder months, Niagara Falls’ vibrant surroundings become blanketed in snow, while night-time brings festive light displays to life. Join other visitors flocking to the spas and hot springs to warm up, or hop on the Hot Chocolate Trail to try seasonal signature beverages across 30 stops.
In summer, more attractions open up, including outdoor adventures like the White Water Walk, Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours and a rope course. The Floral Showhouse features lush gardens if you need a change of scenery.
It’s recommended to check the forecast before heading out to the falls and to prepare for mist that can leave you damp when the wind is strong, even on sunny days. Expect snow, and temperatures to average between a few degrees below and above freezing during the winter months of November to March. Come spring, the mercury rises to an average of around 12˚C, with summer reaching highs of 26˚C. In autumn, average temperatures drop back to around 13˚C.
