Crispy full prawn dumplings are arranged on a wooden plate at JIJA by Vicky Lau.

JIJA by Vicky Lau

Named after a colloquial Cantonese phrase for animated chatter, this teahouse invites diners to connect over refined brews and great food. Bold flavours and rustic preparation methods dominate the Yunnan- and Guizhou-inspired menu, which features appetisers like sour and spicy shrimp soup; and mains including dry-aged roasted pigeon drizzled with jus. To round off the meal, treat yourself to the Yunnan Paris-Brest, a choux pastry with moreish peanut praline cream. Though the interiors feel low-key, sophistication reveals itself in the finer details: the marbled tables, artful plating and Miao embroidery.

You might not notice the narrow doorway of this cosy craft beer pub – where a small slice of Sheung Wan’s Burd Street has been transformed into a cool British watering hole. Imported UK beers pair naturally with pub classics like fish and chips, sausage and mash, and hearty shepherd’s pie. If in doubt, the menu provides in-depth explanations and tasting notes of its various beers: pale ale, porter, lager and more. Besides the refreshments, the bar screens Premier League matches for dedicated and casual football fans alike to gather.

Sugar

With its expansive outdoor deck on the 32nd floor of the East Hong Kong hotel, Sugar spotlights Victoria Harbour views from the eastern side of Hong Kong Island. This quiet stretch of skyline invites diners to slow down the conversation while nibbling on Asian-inspired loaded fries and grilled skewers.
