Intimate encounters in the great outdoors lie within easy reach of Johannesburg. A 40-minute drive out of the city, at Broederstroom’s Lion & Safari Park , you’ll find an abundance of wildlife.

Must-do

Safaris don’t have to be in a Jeep; you can also hit the ground on horseback. You might only see herbivores, but you’ll get much closer because the animals feel safer around horses – I got almost face to face with several zebras. Even beginners can get involved; your guide will check your riding experience and, if you’re a little more advanced, you can try things like cantering, which is very fun. The weather is also comfortable most of the year: hot and sunny during the day but cool and fresh in the morning and evening.

Must-eat

There’s a steakhouse called Trumps Grillhouse and Butchery that’s famous among crew – not just Cathay Pacific but other airlines, too. It’s our gathering spot. They serve really good biltong – South African beef jerky. I’m a picky eater and don’t normally like jerky, but my crewmates encouraged me to try this one and now I’m addicted.

Must-pack

I recommend lip balm, not because you especially need to glam up for Joburg, but because it’s really dry in the heat. La Mer’s The Lip Volumizer is a good one.
