As summer fades into autumn, Hong Kong’s cultural calendar is bursting with energy. The highlight of the month has to be Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the city’s biggest holidays, marked by mooncakes , lanterns, dragon dances and family reunions. Beyond the traditional festivities, you can also look forward to fashion shows, cinematic retrospectives and world‑class concerts. Those visiting Hong Kong this September can find unforgettable experiences on the stage, in galleries, on club dancefloors and elsewhere.

Throughout the month, lantern displays bring the city to life, with a Mid-Autumn Lighting Installation at the Cultural Centre Piazza from 17 September to 11 October, as well as a Mid‑Autumn Lantern Carnival at Victoria Park, Causeway Bay, from 19-27 September. The Victoria Park carnival will feature a massive lantern show as well as workshops on traditional lantern-making. If you’re looking to connect with a creative community during the holiday, head to The Hive Lai Chi Kok’s Rooftop Moonlit Market for food stalls, handmade finds, carnival game booths and live entertainment.
Mid-Autumn Festival wouldn't be complete without the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, a 67-metre fire dragon bristling with 12,000 burning incense sticks and involving over 300 performers. This year, it takes place from 24-26 September on Hong Kong Island. Initiated in 1880, this time-honoured tradition is ultimately a benediction for peace and safety.
