What’s the deal?
The Capella Bangkok sits within the Chao Phraya Estate, sharing a plot of land with the Four Seasons on Charoen Krung Road, the first paved road in Bangkok, built before the city centre shifted east towards Sukhumvit. It’s a location with deep history, but the Capella lives firmly in the present. Opened in late 2020, it’s a far more compact property than its Four Seasons neighbour, with just 101 rooms, every one of which overlooks the river. That slim, low profile works to its benefit. It feels deeply residential – exactly what the Capella brand strives for – and there’s a distinct atmosphere of peace that is apparent as soon as you step inside.
Check-in happens in the quiet Living Room. There’s no lobby here, but instead a lounge that greets you with snacks, champagne and conversation. In the rooms, interiors are elevated and comfortable, modern Asian with a plush touch. Our entry-level Riverfront room was a generous 61 square metres, complete with an open-air balcony with daybed, ideal for sundowners or the dawn chorus. An expansive walk-in wardrobe features elegant details like wooden shoe trees, while the marble-lined bathroom has double sinks and a large bathtub taking pride of place. Out of the window, you’ll spy the very Instagram-friendly Verandah rooms, featuring outdoor salas and jacuzzi pools. For those after true seclusion in the heart of it all, the super-private ground-floor villas offer direct access to the river itself.
Why stay?
That riverside theme carries through to breakfast, where your morning coffee at Phra Nakhon restaurant can be served al fresco, accompanied by waves crawling up the banks and the low rumble of longtail boat engines. For a true destination meal, the two-Michelin-starred Côte by Mauro Colagreco serves up superb Riviera-style fare, bolstered by herbs and vegetables grown in the onsite greenhouse. Make time for a nightcap at Stella bar, which is a delightfully extravagant counterpart to the restrained design of the rest of the property. Art deco interiors, all golds and blacks, and a show-stopper of a white peacock come together with live jazz and cocktails which celebrate Thai ingredients and history. Try the Phra Nakhon, a rich blend of whisky, cognac, oak smoke and fermented Thai honey and jasmine. The morning after, book a treatment at the intimate Auriga Spa, where you can enjoy first-class therapies that merge a variety of Eastern wellness philosophies and treatments – often with a Thai twist.
When it’s time to head out into the city, a shuttle boat shared with the Four Seasons gives you the chance to get onto the water you spent so long gazing at, offering relatively convenient transfers to Sathorn Pier and Icon Siam mall. Our tip: stick to the riverways, and you won’t have to deal with the Bangkok traffic.
