The coastal Chinese city of Qingdao is all sea, sunshine and serenity – just ask Cathay Pacific flight attendant Yingying Yuan, who’s fortunate enough to call the city home.
“Red-tiled roofs, green trees, and blue sea and sky: these are the elements that make up my beloved hometown, Qingdao. Add to this picturesque setting a laid-back lifestyle and vibrant beer house culture, and you’ve got the ideal summer holiday destination.”

Make the most of Qingdao’s long, lovely coastline. I recommend the No. 1 Bathing Beach for its fine, golden sand and calm waters – perfect for cooling off in the 30°C summer heat. As you’re paddling, turn to face the shore and you’ll get a glimpse of the city’s famed, postcard-like landscape. During low tide, you might also spot residents beachcombing: gathering their own crabs and clams to take home and cook. It’s a fun family activity – you’ll even see children carrying their own little buckets. For excitement, there are speedboat, sailing and parasailing excursions. For relaxation: well, just lie on the beach, Tsingtao beer in hand.

Speaking of beer, try drinking it the Qingdao way: out of a plastic bag. The city is home to numerous small local establishments known as beer houses, outside which you’ll find a beer barrel and tap. Simply fill a bag and pop in a straw. Inside, you can hang the bag from the end of your table while you tuck into grilled seafood. I recommend trying the famous sea intestine – a sea creature native to the waters here that’s served with pork and rice. Alternatively, follow the lead of many Qingdao residents and head to a seafood market to select your own catch, then take it to a beer house to be cooked. When seafood is this fresh, it’s best enjoyed steamed, with the flavour speaking for itself.
Without a doubt, bring a swimsuit, beach towel and other beach gear. It’s inevitable during your trip that you’ll visit the sea, and when you do, you won’t be able to resist going in for a dip.
