By day and by night, Bangkok’s market culture is a quintessential part of the city’s gritty, glittering landscape. And there’s far more to discover than elephant pants and banana roti carts: whether you’re an avid thrifter, a discerning foodie, a green-fingered enthusiast or simply on the hunt for souvenirs, this city has a market that’s just up your street.

Chatuchak Market

Best for: gifts, souvenirs and everything else

One of Bangkok’s most talked about destinations, Chatuchak Market is the best known of the city’s markets, and deservedly so. With a mind-blowing maze of over 15,000 stalls, this sprawling open-air shopper’s paradise requires a full day to properly explore. The space is broken down into sections so you don’t lose yourself in its endless rows: clothing, accessories, handicrafts, ceramics, furniture, home decor, food, plants, art and galleries, pets and so on. But truth be told, you’ll find a little of everything everywhere, and part of the fun lies in discovering where each row leads. Be prepared for some good-natured haggling.

Best for: collectables

Chatuchak’s best-kept secret may be the second-hand hotspot located across the street in Red Building. This multi-floor indoor market is home to hundreds of independent vendors selling just about everything: antique furniture and decor, hip clothing, retro toys, rare collectables, vinyl records, camera gear and more. If vintage shopping is your thing, this is the place to be. Better yet, it’s fully air-conditioned, making this the perfect spot for a midday break from the sweltering heat of Chatuchak.

Yaowarat Night Market

Best for: street food

Planted in the heart of bustling Chinatown, Yaowarat Night Market is a top destination for street eats. The area is home to many of Bangkok’s famous Michelin-recommended street food vendors, dotted amid the neon lights and hundreds of other stalls selling all kinds of Thai-Chinese fare. Don’t miss Pa Tong Go Savoey for fried dough served with pandan custard and condensed milk (pa tong go), or peppery rolled noodle soup (guay jub) from Nai Ek Roll Noodles. Expect queues, but worthwhile rewards for the wait.

Train Night Market Srinagarindra

Best for: retro finds

This open-air night market is all funky retro vibes and feel-good nostalgia, from its wide variety of carefully curated vintage shops and stalls to its antique car showcase and kitschy memorabilia. It’s located outside the city centre, so it’s less touristy than other night markets and has a more local feel. If you dig cool finds, this place is chock-full of treasures: grab an old tie-dye Grateful Dead T-shirt or a US military bomber jacket, snag some vintage shoes, rediscover toys from your childhood or take a photo at the retro gas station. The market also has an abundance of food stalls as well as a section with new items.

Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market

Best for: snacks and souvenirs

Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market is located just a short drive outside the city centre and is well worth the trip. You’ll find all kinds of local snacks and fare being sold from both stalls and boats, from fried bananas, pandan pancakes and fruit shakes to fresh seafood, Pad Thai and satay. An essential experience at the market is the one-hour boat ride through the narrow canals of the area (usually including monitor lizard sightings), which also stops at a couple of the smaller floating markets nearby.

Bangkok Flower Market (Pak Khlong Talat)

Best for: flowers

Bangkok’s wholesale and retail flower market is a vibrant, bustling haven of fresh blooms. The market is open 24 hours a day, with the busiest time being the pre-dawn hours when boats and trucks arrive with the flower deliveries. Delight your senses with an immersion of exotic orchids, garlands and special floral arrangements. It’s a captivating experience, whether you’re flower shopping or simply soaking up the atmosphere.

Pattavikorn Market

Best for: thrifting

Pattavikorn is a used goods market offering a totally unique thrifting experience. One of the main attractions is its literal mountains of clothing at rock bottom prices, where shoppers happily climb and dig for buried treasure for as low as THB50 (HK$12) per kilo. Beyond this clothing mountain, other sections include more curated clothing and fashion stalls as well as flea market-style vendors, often with trinkets and collectables dating back decades. Be it a disco ball, antique lunch tins or some ridiculously cheap threads, you’re bound to find something you didn’t know you needed.
