A guide to Cape Town by First officer Jolene Verwey

We spoke with Jolene Verwey, a First officer with Cathay Pacific, about her hometown Cape Town. Here, she shares her favourite spots for visitors.

“I’ve spent most of my life in Cape Town,” she said.

“This mesmerising place, surrounded by majestic mountains and immaculate beaches, leaves a Table Mountain-shaped hole in my heart every time I leave. March is a good time to visit; there are fewer crowds, but the weather is very pleasant.”

Must-do

It’s hard to find things “off the beaten track” in Cape Town, as everything is easily accessible. For instance, Aquila Game Reserve is just a two-hour drive away, and there you can see the Big Five – lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffalos – on a safari day trip.

Whenever I’m in town, I’ll visit multiple South African wineries. My latest find is De Grendel Wine Estate , which offers an award-winning selection of wine alongside beautiful views of Table Mountain. Its signature wine, the Rubaiyat, is my favourite.

A stroll down Sea Point Promenade is also a must. It’s a lively spot where you’re sure to be joined by cyclists, dog walkers, joggers and skaters. Also, nothing beats a sunset at Camps Bay. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the view from the beach, or grab a drink at my favourite seaside restaurant, Café Caprice . 

Must-eat

I recently visited Gold and immediately fell in love with it. This African fusion restaurant serves a 14-course tasting menu while live entertainment happens throughout the meal – my favourite was the djembe drumming session.

Afternoon tea is also popular in Cape Town. I’ve enjoyed high tea around the world, but none come close to my experience at Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel . The hotel’s tea sommelier expertly guides you through 60 different tea varieties – the spiced rooibos with vanilla and orange was exceptional. I took my nieces with me and they were given their own mini high tea set, which was the cutest thing ever.

Must-pack

A digital luggage scale . Cape Town’s wine is so delicious that you’ll be tempted to take some home. I’ve always found it best to keep track of the weight of my luggage throughout the trip.
