Amsterdam exudes an effortless charm, with its serene canals, elegant townhouses and magnificent windmills that have turned for centuries. For Cathay Pacific Flight Attendant Adri Cheng, there’s no better time to visit this city than in spring, when vibrant flowers inject colour into Amsterdam’s many gardens and terraces.

“I love Amsterdam in the spring. The weather is pleasant, the people are kind and, if you’re lucky, the city’s famed tulips will be in full bloom.”

Must-do

See the tulip displays at Keukenhof Gardens – ideally in May, when they’re at their loveliest. A direct shuttle bus from the city centre makes getting to the park straightforward, yet there tends not to be big crowds. I was pleasantly surprised during my visit to find that I could take my time admiring the flowers.

Gardens aside, I enjoy simply walking around the city, taking in the fresh air and picturesque views. If you prefer not to walk, you’ll find Amsterdam well connected by tram. A boat tour is another great option; I’d like to try one next time I visit so I can see the city from a different perspective.

Must-eat

There are two musts: pannenkoeken and stroopwafels. Pannenkoeken are delicious crêpes prepared fresh by street vendors. There are endless toppings to choose from, but I like to go for classic chocolate sauce. Stroopwafels are a popular supermarket snack – they’re soft, chewy and highly addictive. I always buy several packets in different flavours to bring home with me.

Must-pack

A two-in-one camera and printer that fits in your bag, so you can easily print out all your travel photos on the spot. I especially like the Kodak MiniShot .
