Controlled and banned items
Bringing liquids, aerosols, gels, and powders aboard
You may bring liquids, aerosols, and gels in your cabin luggage as long as they do not exceed a maximum volume of 100ml for each item, carried in one resealable, transparent plastic bag no more than 1-litre in capacity per passenger. See below for details.
There are security restrictions in the United States and Australia/New Zealand on the carriage of certain types of powders into the cabin of an aircraft, limiting maximum volume to 350ml (12oz). Please refer to Route exceptions below for further information.
Items exceeding stated amounts should be packed into your checked bags. Please note that airport security personnel will remove items that do not meet these requirements before you fly.

Packaging your items
Please use a resealable, transparent plastic bag or clear case to transport your liquids:
- Must not exceed 20cm / 8in in height and width
- Must be 1 litre in volume
- Must be transparent and re-sealable
- Items must fit inside comfortably
- Bag must fasten when closed
- One bag per passenger
- Bag must be presented separately from hand baggage for security
Types of item
Please use the following types of liquid, gel or aerosol as a guide:
- Gels, like hair gel or shower gel
- Lotions and liquids, like sun cream or roll-on deodorant
- Pastes, like toothpaste or Vaseline (only when travelling with infants)
- Pressurised foams and sprays, like shaving foam or pressurised deodorant
- Foodstuffs, like water or yoghurt
- Liquid cosmetics, like foundation or lip-gloss
Item exceptions
The following items, intended for use during your trip, can be carried in hand baggage in quantities above 100ml, provided they are presented for inspection at security.
- Medicines that are essential for travel, like diabetic kits
- Baby food, in paste or liquid form (if you are travelling with an infant)
- Expressed breast milk, of breast feeding mothers travelling with or without their baby
- Non-liquid cosmetics, like lipsticks, powder foundation and solid deodorant
Please note the above exemptions are subject to verification by security.
Duty Free items
You may bring any volume of liquid, aerosol and gel items purchased at Duty Free stores in your hand luggage, provided you keep your proof of purchase and kept in a sealed, tamper-evident bag. Please note that some Duty Free stores may not provide you with a sealed, tamper-evident bag on purchase.
Route exceptions
The following destinations have restrictions which may affect which liquids, aerosols, gels, or powders you may bring in your cabin baggage. Please be sure to check this list before you travel to ensure you pack them appropriately.
Flights from Australia
Powders
Passengers are permitted to carry a maximum of 12oz (350ml) of inorganic powders (for example: salt, sand, talcum powder and some types of make-up) in the cabin of aircraft flying from Australia. Passengers should remove and separate powders, liquids, aerosols and gels from their cabin baggage and place them separately in a tray for x-ray examination at security screening points when departing Australia.
Items excluded from the 12oz (350ml) restriction include baby products used to care for and/or feed an infant/toddler, medical/therapeutic products and cremated remains. Duty-free powders are also excluded when contained inside of a sealed bag with proof of purchase attached.
The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above).
Passengers arriving in Bahrain without further connecting flights can purchase duty free liquid items in-flight on the last sector of their journey.
The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above).
Passengers arriving in Canada without further connecting flights can purchase duty free liquid items in-flight on the last sector of their journey. Please note that if travelling between the USA and Canada in the last sector of your journey, you are permitted to carry liquids over 100ml on board.
The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above). However, you may not bring any alcohol on board on a domestic flight. Please pack any alcohol in your checked baggage.
The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above).
Passengers arriving in Europe or the United Kingdom without further connecting flights can purchase duty free liquid items in-flight on the last sector of their journey.
The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above). However, you may not bring any liquids on board (apart from medicines or baby formula) or purchase duty free liquid items in-flight when departing from India on a connecting flight.
The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above) for direct flights only. You may not bring any liquids on board when on a connecting flight through Indonesia.
Liquids, aerosols and gels purchased at Duty Free are permitted to be brought on board as hand luggage when travelling from the following countries purchased at the original airport(s), provided the items are placed inside a sealed, tamper-evident bag with proof of purchase, and that there are no additional restrictions imposed by the authorities of your destination.

The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above) for direct flights only. You may not bring any liquids on board when on a connecting flight through Japan. (except for Narita and Haneda).
** No Duty Free stores at airports on our network in Japan would provide tamper evident bags to customers, except Narita, limited stores at Haneda, Osaka, and Nagoya. Please make sure to have the items packed in tamper evident bags and let the store clerk know that you have an onward connecting flight.
Flights to New Zealand
Liquids
The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above) for direct flights and connecting domestic flights only. You may not bring any liquids on board when on an international connecting flight through New Zealand.
Jars of honey and fish oil supplements exceeding 100ml in total volume cannot be hand carried, and must be checked in.
Flights from New Zealand
Powders
Passengers are permitted to carry a maximum of 12oz (350ml) of inorganic powders (for example: salt, sand, talcum powder and some types of make-up) in the cabin of aircraft flying from New Zealand. Passengers should remove and separate powders, liquids, aerosols and gels from their cabin baggage and place them separately in a tray for x-ray examination at security screening points when departing New Zealand.
Items excluded from the 12oz (350ml) restriction include baby products used to care for and/or feed an infant/toddler, medical/therapeutic products and cremated remains. Duty-free powders are also excluded when contained inside of a sealed bag with proof of purchase attached.
The restrictions on travel with liquids are the same as regular travel (listed above) for direct flights only. You may not bring any liquids on board when on a connecting flight through Taiwan China.
Powders
Passengers are permitted to carry less than 12oz (350ml) of powder-like substances (for example: flour, sugar, ground coffee, spices) in the cabin of aircraft flying to the United States. Passengers will undergo additional security checks at the boarding gate in Hong Kong before departure (or Vancouver for passengers travelling on CX888 to New York).
Items excluded from the less than 12oz (350ml) restriction include baby formula, medication and human remains. Duty-free powders are also excluded when contained inside of a properly sealed Secure Tamper Evident Bag.
