Known domestically for its beer-brewing heritage, Qingdao has quietly grown into one of the Chinese Mainland’s most dynamic seaside getaways. As the temperature rises, locals and visitors gravitate towards Golden Beach, where open air beer gardens, live music and late night revelry transform the shoreline into a weeks long summer celebration. But beyond the festivities lies a city full of layered history, European architecture, mountain hikes and a dining scene shaped by one of the country’s longest coastlines.

Qingdao International Beer Festival

Qingdao is a true beer city, and whether you opt to drink it from a plastic bag on a street corner or enjoy a freshly poured pint at a seaside bar, the beverage is woven into daily life. So integral is it, in fact, that the annual Qingdao International Beer Festival – Asia’s largest beer festival – takes over the city every summer, typically from mid-July to mid-August.

Over the course of several weeks, Golden Beach Beer City on the west coast becomes the heart of proceedings, joined by satellite venues across the city – including sites in Laoshan Mountain and the historic old town. Brewers from around the world showcase hundreds of beer varieties, while a dedicated craft beer zone spotlights the Chinese Mainland’s growing independent beer scene.

Beer may be the headline act, but there are also countless live performances, themed competitions, fireworks displays and light installations to keep the energy going long into the night.

Beyond the festival

There are plenty of other ways to experience Qingdao’s beer culture. The Tsingtao Beer Museum showcases the history of the Chinese Mainland’s beer industry – from the founding of Tsingtao Beer in 1903 to the present day, with antique brewing equipment and archival photographs on display. The visit ends on a high at the Tsingtao 1903 Bar, where you can sample freshly brewed beer poured straight from the barrel.

For a taste of the next generation, head to local favourite Strong Ale Works . Wooden interiors and soft lighting set the tone at this laid-back watering hole that specialises in craft beer, from lagers to IPAs and everything in between. If you’re craving a classic cocktail, make a beeline for Old Jack’s Bar, where the septuagenarian owner will be happy to make you one of the house’s signature gin and tonics.

Where to dine

Hemmed in by water on three sides, Qingdao boasts an extensive coastline of more than 700 kilometres, where warm and cold currents converge to create abundant fishing grounds. Locals flock to Tuandao Market in Shinan District for an affordable, no-frills, seafood feast. Choose from tanks brimming with lobster, crab, scallop and squid, most of which can be cooked at nearby stalls. Of course, you’ll want to wash it down with a glass of cold Tsingtao.

For dining with a view, head to Rivi Lounge. Both indoor and al fresco seating afford panoramic views of the terracotta roofs and church spires of the old town. The menu leans Western-style, with dishes such as salmon salad and avocado-and-prawn tartare, while cocktails provide a fitting accompaniment.

Another standout is Rang Casa, a private kitchen hidden inside an old mansion. Surrounded by a garden and adorned with elegant European-style decor, it boasts an immersive fine-dining experience that blends local ingredients with European influences.

What to see

A stroll through Qingdao’s old town and Badaguan District is like stepping back in time: picture tree-lined streets and well-preserved German-style architecture such as the Catholic Church and the former Kiautschou Governor’s Hall. For a change of pace, head to Laoshan Mountain, where hiking trails pass waterfalls, granite peaks and rugged coastline.

Come evening, the Qingdao International Sailing Centre becomes one of the city’s most photogenic spots. The pier stretches far out to sea, offering a perfect vantage point as the sun dips below the horizon. And as night falls, the pier lights up and Qingdao’s historic waterfront buildings begin to glitter and shimmer.
