What else are Cathay Pacific doing to manage emissions?

Carbon offsetting is one of the many ways we reduce our carbon footprint. Improving fuel efficiency through technology and operation improvements, and investing in the development and adoption of biofuel are our other main approaches.

To optimise our fuel efficiency, we have set up a fuel monitoring system and implemented frequent engine core washing. Over the years, we have also aquired more fuel-efficient aircrafts, including the Airbus A350-1000s and A321neo. Through the use of newer and more energy-efficient aircraft and operational improvements including single-engine taxiing, we yielded an industry-leading 2% improvement in fuel efficiency in traffic carried in 2018 (compared to 2017). We saw an accumulative improvement of 28% since 1998.

Cathay Pacific is also one of the first airlines to invest in the technology behind sustainable aviation fuel. As an investor of Fulcrum, a US-based BioEnergy company, we have committed to sourcing over 1 million tonnes of SAF generated from household waste during the period of 2020 to 2030.

We remain committed to leading industry-wide advancements in climate change mitigation by actively involving in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), a global scheme aimed at capping the net carbon emissions from international aviation at 2020 levels.
