Cathay Pacific’s route network: 80 years of connection
Over the past 80 years, Cathay’s story has intersected with moments of historic change, technological progress and societal shifts. Through it all, our purpose has remained the same: bringing people together. Since 1946, Cathay Pacific’s route network has been steadily expanding, connecting millions of travellers for business, leisure and more around the world.

Early passenger service
Cathay Pacific Airways launched in a world recovering from war, shaped by both necessity and limitation. In those early years, we shuttled much-needed goods and small groups of passengers between Sydney, Shanghai, Hong Kong and key South East Asian hubs, including Manila, Ho Chi Minh City (then known as Saigon) and Bangkok, aboard our Douglas DC-3 aircraft.
By the 1960s, the advent of powerful jetliners ushered in the Golden Age of aviation. We expanded to more destinations across Asia and Australia, making previously inconceivable experiences possible – such as departing from Hong Kong in the morning and arriving in Singapore in time for tea at the Raffles. A growing network also made it easier for Hong Kong’s diverse communities to stay connected to home, from Darwin to Jakarta to Kolkata.
The jet age
The arrival of our first Boeing 747 – the wide-body “jumbo jet” – in 1979 propelled us towards our goal of becoming the premier international airline connecting Asia and the rest of the world. Its impressive range allowed us to expand our long-haul flight operations to Europe and North America over the next two decades, supporting Hong Kong’s rise as a global financial centre. Whether carrying bankers to London or entrepreneurs to Delhi, we helped facilitate opportunities for a new generation of movers and shakers.
These developments culminated in our record-breaking 1998 “Polar One” flight from New York to Hong Kong – the longest non-stop journey by distance at that time and a landmark moment in transpolar flights. Just as importantly, our growing reach also brought diasporic families closer together, with non-stop commercial flights from Hong Kong to Vancouver and key cities in the United States, including San Francisco and Los Angeles.
A truly global network
Today, we connect travellers to more than 100 destinations worldwide, with recently introduced and resumed routes including Urumqi, Hyderabad, Brussels, Munich, Rome, Dallas–Fort Worth and Seattle. Operating out of Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok, we’ve also strengthened our presence across the Chinese Mainland and the Greater Bay Area, deepening our proud ties to this dynamic region.
