A sprawling metropolitan area home to more than 10.5 million residents, Bangkok is Thailand’s biggest and most energetic city. Its Thai name, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, translates to “city of angels” – a reference to the myriad historic temples and shrines it is home to.

Built on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, it’s a crucial trading port for the region as well as a dynamic hub for business networking, trade events and more. Stepping out from Bangkok’s boardrooms, opportunities abound for business travellers with a little leisure time, from cultural landmarks and bustling markets to luxury shopping malls and world-class dining.

Where to start

Despite Bangkok’s size, it’s surprisingly easy to find your bearings. Sukhumvit Road acts as a cross- section, running through downtown and offering access to the disparate neighbourhoods. Along this road, you’ll pass key sights, including the newly expanded Em District , luxury retail complexes like the new EmSphere . Not too far away is Chatuchak Market – the world’s largest weekend market, with more than 15,000 stalls selling everything from homewares and electronics to clothing and food.

Elsewhere, if you head south from Sanam Luang square, you’ll reach The Grand Palace , a historic royal complex spanning more than 2 million sq ft and bordering the meandering Chao Phraya River. Follow the river southwards to Iconsiam , a stylish new mall occupying prime real estate on the other bank and facing the King Power Mahanakhon , dubbed the Pixel Building for the glass blocks that line its façade.

Where to stay

Bangkok’s best hotels cluster around two areas. The first is the Chao Phraya, home to stalwarts of the city’s five-star establishments. Besides classics like The Peninsula Bangkok and Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, recent additions to the area include the Capella Bangkok and the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River , the latter of which has ample meeting spaces, the Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant Yu Ting Yuan and BKK Social Club – ranked third on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2023 list. The other place to find great hotels is Sukhumvit Road, reached by one of the Skytrain (BTS) lines. The recently refurbished Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit is a luxurious base for business travellers, offering modern decor and state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of the city.

The acclaimed chef Gaggan Anand has returned to the city with “The Gaggan Experience” at his eponymous restaurant, while Khao serves authentic Thai food in a contemporary setting. Rongros is a traditional Thai riverfront eatery set against the backdrop of the beautiful Wat Arun temple .

Elsewhere, Sri Trat pays homage to the southeastern Thai region of Trat, famed for its seafood. When toasting to success, head to one of the city’s rooftop bars. Above 11 and Sky Bar tower over their neighbours and boast far-reaching views. For a one-of-a-kind experience, Lost in Thaislation mixes innovative cocktails by using distinctly Thai flavours.

What to know

Business attire in Thailand is more conservative. Womenswear tends to cover the shoulders and knees. Shoes should be removed when entering a temple, private home and, in some cases, an office space.

If you’re bringing a gift to your meeting, present it with both hands to show your respect. If you’re buying things to take home, avoid choosing a Buddha statue, as it is a criminal offence to export these from Thailand without a licence.

Downtime done right

While away a morning or afternoon strolling through Lumphini Park to observe the city’s prehistoric residents – the monitor lizards – in their element. One of the best ways to experience Bangkok is via its ancient waterways. Take a leisurely long-tail boat ride along the Chao Phraya to see how locals live along these impressive canals. If you’ve got a day to spare, take a trip to the historic city of Ayutthaya , a Unesco World Heritage Site just an hour’s drive from Bangkok. After a day of exploring, retreat to Oasis Spa for a traditional Thai massage.

Take something home

One of the most popular souvenirs from Bangkok is its refined silks. Check out Jim Thompson ’s collection of silk clothing, accessories and home decor at the brand’s iconic flagship store on Surawong Road. Or visit the bustling Chatuchak Market to hunt for bargain homewares, trinkets and delicious Thai snacks for your colleagues and loved ones.
