14 Jun 2004
Cathay Pacific Airways today signed a three-year contract with the Hong Kong Jockey Club to be the first ever title sponsor of the Hong Kong International Races. From the 2004 event in December, the world famous Hong Kong International Races will become known as the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races.
The Hong Kong International Races is a world-class horseracing event and a major attraction for overseas tourists as well as a sporting celebration for people in Hong Kong.
Cathay Pacific was the official carrier for the event in 2003. This year, the airline has extended its backing by becoming the title sponsor. As part of its support, special tour packages will be created to draw overseas visitors to the event.
Cathay Pacific Director and Chief Operating Officer Philip Chen and Hong Kong Jockey Club Chief Executive Lawrence Wong signed the contract at a ceremony at the Jockey Club's Theatre of Racing Museum.
Hong Kong Tourism Board Executive Director Clara Chong also attended to underline the international event's importance to Hong Kong's tourism development.
Cathay Pacific has a long tradition of helping to bring international sports and cultural events to Hong Kong. The airline is joint sponsor with Credit Suisse First Boston of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament and is currently helping to stage the hit musical MAMMA MIA!
Cathay Pacific Director and Chief Operating Officer Philip Chen said: "As Hong Kong's airline, Cathay Pacific is proud to be the first title sponsor of the Hong Kong International Races. It is a tremendous event enjoyed by thousands of people from all around the world and Hong Kong and we are delighted to be a part of it. We look forward to bringing not only runners and riders but also a great number of visitors to Hong Kong to join the excitement."
"The Hong Kong International Races is the biggest week in Hong Kong sport, a week Hong Kong becomes the centre of world racing attention and when over one billion people will watch the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races," said HKJC Chief Executive, Mr Lawrence Wong.
