Cathay Pacific racecourse boxes add to Hong Kong

05 Sep 2004

Cathay Pacific Airways, with Guest of Honour, Financial Secretary Henry Tang, today celebrated the opening of its new spectator box at the Hong Kong Jockey Club at racecourse Shatin on the first day of Hong Kong's new racing season.

The "Cathay Pacific The Wing" box at Shatin opened as part of the airline's three-year title sponsorship of the Hong Kong International Races. For the next three years, starting with this year's meeting in December, the week-long event will be known as the "Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races", as part of the airline’s commitment to reinforce Hong Kong's profile as Asia's events capital. A second "Cathay Pacific The Wing" box at Happy Valley will open on 8 September.

As the name suggests, each box is fitted with a version of the signature Long Bar at the airline's "The Wing" First and Business Class lounge at Hong Kong International Airport.

The boxes will be available to attract overseas visitors to the city, with access included in special "Fly 'n' See Hong Kong International Races" travel packages. They can also be booked by members of the airline's The Marco Polo Club.

Cathay Pacific is the first company to take title sponsorship of the "Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races," as they will be known. The move underlines the airline's commitment to support the development of Hong Kong tourism and bring the greatest horse racing talent to Hong Kong for the enjoyment of everyone in the community.

Cathay Pacific Director and Chief Operating Officer Philip Chen said: "Cathay Pacific's title sponsorship of the Hong Kong International Races gives us the opportunity to further promote Hong Kong to the world. Offering visitors access to our prime-location spectator boxes at both Shatin and Happy Valley will add to the attraction one of Hong Kong's greatest sporting spectacles."

The Hong Kong International Races is a world-class horseracing event and a major attraction for overseas tourists as well as a sporting celebration for people in Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific has a long tradition of helping to bring international sports and cultural events to Hong Kong. The airline is joint sponsor with Credit Suisse First Boston of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament and is recently helped to stage the hit musical MAMMA MIA!
