Cathay Pacific to share sponsorship of Hong Kong Rugby Sevens

31 Jul 2003

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced that it will, at the invitation of Credit Suisse First Boston, share joint sponsorship on the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament, making a three-year commitment starting in 2004.

The airline’s decision to resume joint sponsorship underlines its commitment to rebuild Hong Kong’s tourism industry following the outbreak of atypical pneumonia and support its continued development for years to come.

As the airline of Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific has always done its best to support Hong Kong’s economic, social and cultural development. Cathay Pacific has a long history of sponsorship of great sporting events in Hong Kong, including the Cricket Sixes and the Sevens tournament itself in previous years.

Cathay Pacific Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive David Turnbull said: “We are delighted that we are once again able to be a joint sponsor of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, and I would like to thank Credit Suisse First Boston for inviting us to share that honour. Hong Kong is already one of the world’s top tourism destinations. It is exciting, dynamic and entertaining, just like the Sevens, and we take very seriously our role in supporting Hong Kong’s recovery and future development.

Mr Turnbull added: "The huge amount of positive publicity that the Sevens generates will help to excite interest in Hong Kong among other tourists and at the same time reinforce the belief in the business world that Hong Kong is a great city in which to work and live. By joining forces with the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union and Credit Suisse First Boston we hope that we will be able to play our part to maintain the success of the tournament and the continued development of Hong Kong."
