Cathay Pacific extends 'World's Biggest Welcome' to Europe

31 Jan 2002

Cathay Pacific today drew the first 20 'World's Biggest Welcome' lucky draw winners who nominated friends and family living in Europe to visit Hong Kong. The first winner in this draw elected to fly a friend in from Paris.

Among the other 19 winners, 12 chose London, 2 Frankfurt, 3 Rome and another 2 Paris.

The number of entries to win one of the 10,000 tickets that Cathay Pacific is giving away for people to visit Hong Kong has doubled every day of the campaign. More than 150,000 completed forms were returned on January 30 - equal to the combined total collected in the first four days of the campaign.

Today the flood showed little sign of easing at collection points at six MTR stations and at the departure level of the Hong Kong International Airport as people scrambled to enter before the Friday night deadline to be among the first winners of tickets for North America. Almost half of the entries received so far have nominated friends and family living in Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Toronto.

The final closing date for all entries is midnight of 2 February 2002.

Two more special draws will take place this week. Tomorrow it will be entries from people who nominated friends in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The draw for North America is on Saturday. All 100 winners from these initial draws will receive two additional air tickets for their own travel and will automatically qualify for the special Grand Draw on 5 February. All winners will be notified individually.

Among those present at the draw today were local celebrity William So, Legislative Council Member Mr Howard Young, and District Council Chairman Ms Ting Yuk Chee, Mr Suen Kai Cheong, Mr Lam Man Fai, Mr Tam Kwok Kiu, Mr Chow Yick Hay, and Mr Ip Kwok Chung.

Each day's draw follows a theme designed to highlight different aspects of Hong Kong as a world class tourist destination. Today's theme focused on great places to go in Hong Kong. Friday's theme will be the good service that visitors get.

Speaking at today's ceremony, Mr Young said: "Hong Kong has many wonderful places to visit in addition to the main attractions. We have traditional shops like those in Hollywood Road, and Stanley Market. We also have the world's most fascinating harbour and beautiful beaches. The Mai Po Wetland and the Lantau Buddha are two must-see attractions. There is always something for everyone in Hong Kong. I hope we will all be good hosts to our special Cathay Pacific visitors."

Entry form drop-off points are located at six MTR stations - Central, Admiralty, Causeway Bay, Kowloon Tong, Mongkok and Tsim Sha Tsui, and at the departure level of the Hong Kong International Airport.
