Cathay Pacific inflight wines win two top international awards

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced that two of its current line-up of inflight wines have won top international awards. The newest addition to its inflight "cellar" - the Voyager Estate Chardonnay 1999 - is the holder of a Double Gold from the San Francisco International Wine Competition. The Taylors' St Andrews Shiraz 1998 - which has been served on board Cathay Pacific flights since the summer - has already picked up a string of awards, most recently the title "Australia's Best Shiraz" at the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
Cathay Pacific Purser Rie Ng commented: "Many of our passengers really know their wine, and I always feel proud that I can serve them wines that they truly appreciate. The Shiraz has proved very popular - some frequent flyers now ask for it by name when they board without ever referring to the wine list!"

The San Francisco International Wine Competition is one of the largest and most prestigious wine-judging events in the United States, and the Voyager Estate was the only Australian white wine to win this major award. Double Gold Medals are only awarded to wines receiving a unanimous vote of Gold from the entire judging panel.

The Great Australian Shiraz Challenge received 205 impressive entries, but the 1998 vintage Taylors' St Andrews Shiraz was the only one to receive Gold medal points from all four judges, and topped the table at 96/100 points. Tasting notes describe the wine as "mouth-filling, creamy mild-palate with fine grained velvety tannins providing balance and length. Complex flavours of cedar wood, vanilla and cigars mingle with varietal flavours of plum and liquorice. A generously flavoured wine to savour."

Both wines are served in the First Class cabin. Taylors' Shiraz is served between Hong Kong and Australia and New Zealand, while the Voyager Estate is served on all flights except those between Hong Kong and North America and New Zealand. Superior food and beverages are a hallmark of Cathay Pacific's premium products. One of many new features of the airline's New Business Class product is a cocktail bar with sleek granite worktops and designer lighting where passengers can meet and mingle inflight. New Business Class is being progressively introduced throughout the long haul fleet.

The airline also recently opened The Pier, its second premium lounge at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). The Pier features three bars and two exclusive restaurants. Cathay Pacific's first lounge at HKIA - The Wing - was last year named first in a Forbes magazine list of The World's Ten Best Airport Lounges.
