Abacus to act as Global Distribution System for Travel Exchange
26 Feb 2001
The pan Asia-Pacific travel exchange announced today it has chosen Abacus to become its primary Global Distribution System (GDS) provider.
The travel exchange has been set up by Air New Zealand, Ansett Australia, Cathay Pacific Airways, China Airlines, EVA Airways, Garuda Indonesia, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas Airways, Royal Brunei Airlines, Silk Air and Singapore Airlines. It has yet to be given an official name. Additional partner airlines are expected to join the exchange. The venture will be operated and governed as a new business entity separate from each of the airlines and run by an independent management team.
The travel exchange aims to be the region's leading online travel portal and will offer a wide spectrum of travel services such as air travel, hotel bookings, car rentals and tour packages. It will have both business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) elements.
Abacus, the largest Global Distribution System in Asia-Pacific, has been selected as the primary GDS provider giving the exchange's B2C online consumers electronic access to travel information such as airline schedules, fares, linkage to hotel, car rental and cruise companies; as well as reservations capabilities, specially tailored for the region. Online consumers can look forward to an unprecedented choice in travel products.
Abacus has also been named as the preferred GDS when the exchange offers B2B Internet-enabling and online distribution services to the travel industry. This will provide opportunities for the travel trade and other travel distribution companies to enhance their online capabilities effectively.
Cathay Pacific's General Manager e-Business Tim Fitzsimmons said: "We are delighted Abacus have agreed to provide the Global Distribution System for our new travel exchange. With their experience and expertise, Abacus will play a vital part in helping the exchange become a leader in Asian travel services."
Abacus President & CEO William Liu said: "We are delighted that the exchange has chosen Abacus as their GDS supporting the exchange. With our strong network and industry knowledge of the region, Abacus can work together with the exchange to realize its aim to be the Asia-Pacific's leading online travel portal."
The travel exchange recently announced it has selected Travelocity, the world's leading online travel provider, as its primary technology provider.FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT:
