Cathay Pacific to support Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition for further 3 years

04 Nov 2010

Cathay Pacific Airways today announced that it has signed an agreement with the organisers of the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition to be the title sponsor of the event for another three years. Cathay Pacific supported the inaugural competition last year and is now committed to supporting the event through to 2012.

The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition is the largest pan-Asian wine competition and is held in conjunction with the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. The winners of this year’s competition will be announced at a gala dinner at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre tonight (4 November).

The competition provides a platform for the wine and spirits industry to showcase its products to the Asian market. Judging is conducted by renowned Asian-born, Asian-based wine judges. It is the first international wine competition to include a category for “Best Wine from China” and categories for the best wines paired with specific Asian dishes.

As Hong Kong’s home carrier, Cathay Pacific is committed to supporting events that add life and colour to the city. At the same time, the airline provides some of the world’s best wines to its passengers, with an inflight wine selection that has won several international awards. Cathay Pacific will invite wine suppliers who participated in this year’s competition to provide wines for review to see if they are suitable for serving onboard the airline’s flights.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Marketing and Product James Ginns said: “Both Cathay Pacific and the International Wine & Spirits Competition promote the same values: excellence and quality. Cathay strives to provide excellent product and services both inflight and on the ground - including superb wines; the competition brings together the best wines from around the world. We are delighted to continue our support for this wonderful event which we believe will help to build Hong Kong’s reputation as an international wine hub.”

Director Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition Debra Meiburg MW said: “The current wine excitement in Asia is extraordinary. When I arrived in Hong Kong in the mid-80's, there were only a few wine choices - and all predictably mundane. Now, the thrilling array of wines eager to enter our markets means the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition plays a key role in helping new wine enthusiasts to make selections that suit our regional taste preferences and favourite dishes. The diverse voices of the pan-Asian panel of judges are what make this competition unique in the wine world and this wouldn't be possible without the support of our title sponsor, Cathay Pacific Airways.”
