Hong Kong's Le French May culture festival is celebrating its 30th year, and there’s no better way to enjoy the festivities than by indulging in some of the city's finest French cuisine.
Whether you’re in the mood for bistro classics or a more contemporary fare, these restaurants offer a range of options to suit every taste. And best of all, Cathay Pacific's Cathay members can earn extra miles when they choose to dine at these eateries.
Bon appétit.
You won’t be able to miss the entrance to Maison ES , which takes its design cues from a Parisian flower shop – complete with fresh-cut flowers and an attendant bicycle. The restaurant is headed by Shanghainese chef Esther Sham, whose cooking intertwines her classical French training with Asian ingredients. Standouts on the menu include langoustine wontons flavoured with a hairy crab nage, and XO sauce geoduck linguine with garlic frites.
Eric Cheung, Head Chef for Maison ES since 2016, brings incredible culinary expertise and an enthusiasm for new cooking techniques to the restaurant, which are reflected in his management style and dishes.
“The team at Maison ES is rather small,” says Cheung, “so we work very closely together, and they truly feel like an extended family to me. What I appreciate is that all of us feel very free to express our ideas, especially when it comes to creating a new menu.”
Where can you find him enjoying a meal when he isn’t busy in the kitchen?
“When it comes to the French dining scene in Hong Kong, I love Pastis Bistro on Wyndham Street, which offers an authentic taste of little Paris,” he says. “Amber’s Chef Richard Ekkebus used to mentor our boss, Chef Esther Sham, so we all have great respect for his creations.”

Located in SoHo on busy Elgin Street, Bouchon Bistro Français boasts a relaxed setting while still being dead-serious about French cuisine. On the menu, you’ll find French bistro favourites such as steak frites (with a choice between hanger, ribeye and tenderloin), confit de canard, and French onion soup. In the evenings, guests spill out from the cosy dining room into the informal al fresco dining area at the front of the restaurant.
Chef Ghale Naulal joined Bouchon Bistro Français in 2014 and instantly fell in love with the techniques of French cooking, along with the simplicity and pleasure that bistro-style cuisine brings to patrons.
“We are part of a small yet lively community within Central,” says Naulal. “We have been in the same spot for over 10 years, and we see a lot of familiar faces every day. As a chef, it’s a sign that the consistency of our work and the passion that we have is appreciated.”
Where does he like to dine when he’s not enjoying the French fare at Bouchon Bistro Français?
“I’m at Pondi,” he reveals, “a neighbourhood spot in Sai Ying Pun. I’m Nepalese, so I love the fragrant and warm spices used in Pondi’s cooking, which is a crossover between French and Indian flavours. I’d also recommend Harbourside Grill in Tsim Sha Tsui for their menu of seasonal and modern French dishes. Bonus - the harbour view is stunning!”
