The Non Catholic Cemetery
A step into this beautiful oasis is a step back in time. Amid the cypress trees, serene funerary sculptures and wildflowers are the final resting places for poets Keats and Shelley, Antonio Gramsci, a founding father of modern European Communism, and famous painters and sculptors.
What was once a 19th-century slaughterhouse is today a hub for Rome's contemporary art scene. The sheer size of the two MACRO pavilions makes them ideal for cutting-edge exhibitions. The complex is open from 4 pm till midnight to attract Testaccio's nocturnal crowd.
With a Spritz cocktail in hand, enjoy fabulous sunsets against the Roman skyline on the terrace of this bar, surrounded by olive and lemon trees. Inside, the clean white décor of the restaurant comprises a different atmosphere of large fireplaces, butcher's benches and wooden and tiled tables.
Take breakfast like a local, at Linari, a landmark pasticceria and bar that's been serving expertly brewed coffee and tantalizing pastries for more than 40 years. Down your coffee standing up – again, like the locals – or take a seat.
Filled with colourful characters and seasonal produce, there are stands selling lighting fixtures and kitchen-wear. Bargain Italian shoes and bags are also for sale. This institution is now in a spanking new building with ancient Roman ruins running underneath it.
