Flights through Hong Kong International Airport 

Everything you need to know about connecting through HKIA, from check-in to arriving at your final destination. 

Transfer and transit services at Hong Kong International Airport are available to all destinations except those from Hong Kong to the Chinese Mainland. For more information, please click here.

We’re here to ensure your transit through Hong Kong goes as smoothly as possible.

  • You meet the latest entry requirements for your destination.
  • You are eligible to transit through Hong Kong.
  • Your onward flight booking is confirmed.
  • You have surgical face masks to wear during your journey. Please note that masks with exhalation valves or vents are not permitted.
  • You don’t need to complete any health forms to transit through Hong Kong but ensure you complete those required by your final destination.
  • You have checked the latest information on your departing flight – at some airports, we may be operating from a different terminal to normal.

Expect the airport check-in to take a little longer than usual. Arrive 2-3 hours before your flight.

  • You can check in on cathaypacific.com up to 48 hours in advance but will still need to collect your boarding pass from a check-in counter.
  • Passengers transiting through Hong Kong must have a confirmed onward ticket or carry an onward boarding pass.

When you arrive at Hong Kong International Airport, follow the signs to the transfer point. There are dedicated transfer areas based on whether you are arriving on a flight from the Chinese mainland or from another destination.

  • If you’re connecting to another Cathay Pacific flight, with your onward boarding pass in hand, simply proceed through security and head upstairs to the departures level.
  • If you’re connecting to another airline, our airport team will be happy to provide the most up-to-date information on arrival.
  • A limited number of restaurants, stores and services remain open at the airport. See the full list hereOpen a new window.
  • Gates 1-24 are dedicated for flights departing to the Chinese mainland. All other flights will depart from gates 25-72.
  • The Wing, First and The Pier, Business are open to passengers with lounge access according to transit origin, please check the lounge pages for the latest admittance details.
  • Leave for your gate at least 60 minutes before your flight’s departure time. 
  • We will board flights by row number to ensure reasonable physical distancing between you and your fellow passengers.
  • You will need to temporarily remove your face mask at the boarding gate to use the e-boarding gates.

How to prepare for your flight and transit through Hong Kong

Arrive early

Arrive 2-3 hours ahead of your flight. We may have to contact immigration at your final destination for approval to accept you for travel.

Plan your luggage

Ensure your carry-on contains what you need for your journey, as you won't be able to access your baggage.

Check your forms

Make sure you have the valid health and travel forms required and that you’re eligible to transit through Hong Kong.

Rest assured

The airport is open 24/7, so if you miss your flight or are rejected from entering Hong Kong, you will be able to stay at the airport until other arrangements are made.

Bring layers

If you have a long wait between your flights, bring an extra layer to stay warm – or act as cushioning for your seat.

Bring snacks

A limited number of restaurants and shops at HKIA are open, though operating hours may be shortened. Bring snacks and a refillable water bottle. 

Bring extra face masks

All travellers are required to wear surgical face masks at the airport and in the cabin. Bring extras.
