Cathay Pacific “I Can Fly” members set to spread their wings and reach for their goals

The latest Cathay Pacific “I Can Fly” Programme took off today, with 100 Hong Kong students embarking on a journey that will enable them to learn about the world of aviation and their responsibilities within the community.

The inaugural ceremony for this year’s “I Can Fly” was held at Cathay Pacific City, hosted by the airline’s Chief Executive John Slosar, with Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung, and Director-General of Civil Aviation Norman Lo as officiating guests.

Launched in 2003, “I Can Fly” aims to give local young people the opportunity to learn more about the different aspects of the aviation industry and at the same time develop a sense of commitment to their community through various social service activities.

This year’s “I Can Fly” programme has been revamped to include more in-depth and comprehensive aviation elements together with a wider exposure to local aviation facilities and overseas learning experiences. Major activities for the 2011-2012 “I Can Fly” include an expanded ground-school curriculum that will cover Flight Operations, Engineering, Inflight Services and Airport Services, visits to key aviation facilities at Hong Kong International Airport, and a self-designed social service programme.

All members will also have the opportunity to enjoy an educational experience overseas, including a flying course in Adelaide, a trip to the Boeing factory in Seattle, or a visit to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) facilities in Shanghai.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, John Slosar said: “Cathay Pacific is very pleased to welcome the 100 members to this year’s “I Can Fly” Programme. As Hong Kong’s home carrier, we have a deep commitment to our local community and in particular to helping young people reach for their dreams. We hope ‘I Can Fly’ proves to be an invaluable and rewarding experience for all 100 members this year.”

Matthew Cheung said: “I am most appreciative of Cathay Pacific’s sterling contribution to community service. I am equally grateful to all Cathay Pacific pilot mentors and staff volunteers supporting the programme. I am sure that given your concerted efforts, “I can fly” will continue to scale new heights in the years ahead.”

Norman Lo led the 100 new joiners of the “I Can Fly” Programme in reading out the members’ pledge, and urged them to learn about the many interesting aspects of the aviation industry.
