Everything you need to know about flying with an infant under 24 months old
A healthy newborn infant is ready to travel with us after the first week of delivery. We require a parent or guardian (aged 18 or above) to travel in the same cabin as the infant at all times.
If your child is 2 years old or above, please see our information about flying with children and unaccompanied minors.
There are two types of tickets that you can buy if you want to bring a baby on board – one for infants and one for children.
If you get an infant ticket, the baby will not occupy their own seat. The baggage allowance is 10 kg.
Usually the infant ticket price is calculated from a discount applied to an adult ticket. If the adult ticket doesn’t offer an infant discount, the next higher fare that offers the discount will be used as the base for calculation.
The infant passenger must be under 24 months throughout the whole journey to qualify for the ticket. If the infant turns two years old before the return trip, you will need to pay the applicable child fare, tax, fee, and charges. The infant ticket is also subject to fare rules and conditions.
If your journey originates in Hong Kong, please contact our Global Contact Centres to check the applicable infant fare and make a booking.
If you get a child ticket, the child will have their own seat and the usual baggage allowance.
A child ticket is especially convenient if you bring your own personal car safety seat or plan on using other safety devices. Please note that not all safety devices are usable or available on all types of aircraft or classes.
If you would like to get a child ticket for your infant under 24 months, please contact our Global Contact Centres.
Travelling with two infants or more
If you are looking to bring more than one baby on board, please note that each parent or guardian can bring a maximum of two infants.
- One of the two infants must reach 6 months old and occupy an infant car safety seat. The applicable child fare will be charged.
- The other infant must be secured onto the parent or guardian with a child restraint device. Infant fare will be charged.
- The parent or guardian should bring their own infant car safety seat, which must comply with the Safety seats and devices.
- These conditions are subject to aircraft type. Some car safety seats, child restraint devices and CARES harnesses are not able to be used on our seats due to safety requirements. For further information, please contact our reservation office. See safety seats and devices
When you’re busy getting ready for your trip, it can sometimes be easy to forget to pack one or two essential items. Here is a list of things that we think your baby might need on the flight:
- Baby formula, liquids, and baby food. Please note: we do not reheat or chill your personal food items for hygiene reasons.
Be sure to check our list of Restricted Items before you leave home.
How much to bring
Let us know if there’s anything you need to help make your flight a smoother one for you and your infant.
Diaper changing tables
Each aircraft has at least two toilets with fold-down tables for changing diapers.
Infant food and breastfeeding
All our flights come fully stocked with baby food. See our special meals menu.
Breastfeeding your baby is allowed during all phases of flight. If you wish to use electric breast pumps while on board, you can do so after the announcement that electronic devices could be switched on, and up until the seat belt sign is switched on before landing. The pumps have to be stowed for take-off, taxiing and landing.
If you bring personal food items on board, please note that we cannot reheat or chill them due to hygiene reasons. To warm your food items, you can request a container with hot water. To bring any food or expressed milk that require refrigeration, please pack in either a cool bag or vacuum flask. You may bring dry ice (up to 2.5 kg /5.5 lb) that is suitably packed to allow CO2 gases to evaporate freely, and you must let us know you are bringing dry ice during check-in.
For more information, please see CDC Travel recommendations for the nursing mother.
Bassinets, safety seats, and safety devices
All our aircraft are equipped with special baby bassinets.
- Our onboard bassinet measures 76.20 cm x 38.10 cm x 20.32cm (30 in x 15 in x 8 in) and can carry up to 12 kg
- A baby older than 6 months may feel uncomfortable in a bassinet
- Please make the request for a baby bassinet at the time of reservation
You can bring your own personal car safety seats as long as they meet our specifications. Due to safety requirements, some aircraft may not be able to accommodate your car safety seat. In those cases, a specially designed child restraint seat may be offered instead.
If you do not want to purchase an extra seat for your infant or child, they may travel with you as long as you use the appropriate safety device. Please let us know if you want a child restraint device when you make your reservation with us. This child restraint device secures your infant or child onto you during the flight for their safety.
There are some emergency seat locations in the plane which are not suitable for parents and guardians with infants. Please check with our local office or your travel agent that your seats have the right safety precautions when you make the reservation.
